Update #9: HAPPY CARNIVAL, KICKSTARTERS!
The Chief's 2012 suit is almost finished, and it is GORGEOUS! Thanks again to all of y'all for helping make it so spectacular. We hope those of y'all in NOLA for Mardi Gras will join us when he and the tribe come out da door - between 9 & 10 am, at the corner of N. Claiborne & LaHarpe St., next to the Circle Food Store at N. Claiborne & St. Bernard.
Here's Kim Welsh's pic of just a teeny piece of the new suit: Not even the color can be revealed before Mardi Gras!

Victor Harris is a working man from the fabled Ninth Ward of New Orleans. His home was completely destroyed in the flood following Hurricane Katrina, and he built a new one with his own two hands. I'm an independent folklorist, with a Ph.D. from the University of Texas. (My house was flooded also, but not destroyed.) He is a community and spiritual leader, as well as a teacher and an artist. I organize projects to support the indigenous culture of New Orleans. He's given me permission to organize this one. If it's successful, the Chief will have plenty of beads, feathers, fabric, sequins, and thread to make his suit: the more, the better. (In fact, the sewing marathon has already begun. He's not waiting around for help, although he will appreciate it.) I will be one of those helping with the sewing and will be responsible for managing the donated funds and paperwork required by Kickstarter. This is really HIS project. I’m just the writer/secretary.
