Residency on the island of Hrisey, Iceland! Making combines that deal with the body as home, and placing them in the foggy expanse.
I've been inspired by Icelanders' serious, yet playful ways for quite a while. I've finally applied for and just been accepted to a residency there, to make make make! I'm venturing to the Nordanbal residency on an island called Hrísey, in Northern Iceland (population: 200!). I'll stay in a studio there for the entire month of October, 2011.
My most recent series, Interior Decorating, explores how the body (or self/mind) is a home, or vessel for imagination and quietude. I believe that each individual claims their own internal cosmos, and so, certain things they do may seem nonsensical from the outside (hence my adding of silly toys atop paintings and sculptures). My combines bring together symbols of the home, body, and a third element of playfulness.
Iceland for me, represents an openness in both its landscape and beliefs. And being on an island lends itself to the themes in my work. I want to find out how my objects will act in that context. My room and studio there costs $400, and the plane ticket will be around $700. Once I arrive in Reykjavik, I will also need to take a bus where I will catch a ferry to the island ($200 round trip). Oh yeah, and then there's the cost of materials!
