About the Series:

Newgrounds: The Forsaken City is a live-action web series developed by Studio Firelight. The series is an action/adventure serial, spanning a 9-episode story arch. We follow a rogue soldier, Pico, as he struggles to unravel the mystery surrounding an elusive company from his past. With the help of the rebel faction known as Tankmen, Pico seeks to unite his old team and bring closure to an unsettled score.

Developing the World of TFC:

The series started its development in the late summer of 2011. Originally we wanted to create a short film set in the world of Newgrounds - however as the premise for the story grew, so did its length. In the interest of telling a rounded and complete story, we made the decision to extend The Forsaken City into a web-series.

Utilizing the Medium:

After we were sure on the choice of taking our story into an episodic medium, we began the intensive process of plotting the series. Normally, a linear narrative harbors its own difficulties in creating an engaging and cohesive plot. With The Forsaken City we set out to tell both the past and present stories of these characters simultaneously. The challenge was to tell each story in their own right, while having the events mirror each other in importance.

A particular aspect of the story that we were adamant to pursue was maintaining the origins of the characters. While we've certainly taken liberties with our adaptations, we're pleased with how these characters' individual stories have meshed together into this alternate universe.

Look Development:

Designing our interpretation was another fun part of the process. We were able to work with some exceptional artists to develop our own feel for the series; establishing a look was essential in anchoring the overall tone. Having these artist play to their individual strengths (while still adding to the overall visual language) has been a joy. We still have a large portion of concept work to create, but the ground work as been laid.
