After the 2010 acclaimed "It Would Be Easier If" - we're set to go into the studio for "Settle" - a dynamic new disc you can preorder!
I'm very proud of this band. Slow/Fast is:
Myself - bass clarinet, alto saxophone, compositions
Russ Johnson - trumpet
Nir Felder - guitar
Adam Armstrong - bass
Fred Kennedy - drums
I've been working on the music for our new record, called SETTLE, since the Fall of last year, and has just been completed and toured live in December. It is very painstakingly through-composed, though it contains large swaths of room for the musicians to open up and do their thing. The music is a hybrid that feels very personal... and, the more I get into it, even emotive. I feel like everything has taken a huge leap forward compositionally, as I've gotten to know the band better and know what we're capable of... and as I improve!
We're going into the studio within the next couple months, and I'm running a 10-day Kickstarter to pre-sell the next record in order to raise funds for studio costs and artist fees. Obviously, $2500 won't nearly cover everything, but it will be an incredible shot in the arm for this project.
Also, if you haven't heard the debut record of this group, I hope you can take this opportunity to pick up a copy, and for music nerds or people who like nice things, pick up a score book.
And -- I've had a number of people say "Hey if John Zorn did a Christmas record, you should do one." Inspired by this is the top perk -- I will record any requested holiday song (denominational or non-denominational) for you in solo saxophone rendition in beautiful sound, and deliver it via mp3 on a date of your choosing, Dec 25-28.
Thank you so much for your support! This project means a lot to me, and your pre-orders will help us make this record.
... Praise for "It Would Be Easier If" (2010 CD):
“Mr. Thomson's compositions are intricately wrought and incident-steeped, even when they move in snowlike drifts. The gutsy precision of the playing calls for hearing this music in a performance setting."
- Nate Chinen, New York Times Critics Choice: New CDs
“Arrestingly beautiful chamber jazz” -Time Out NY Critics Pick
"It Would Be Easier If is fantastic combination of Ken Thomson's well structured chamber arrangements and superior improvisation on the part of each member of the ensemble. It's great to see Thomson finally put all his thoughts and influences into one place and no better way than on his debut. It Would Be Easier If is an impressive work for an artist and composer that I hope will record more as leader and someone you should most certainly check out. I really love this record." - JazzWrap
