Will started out in the film industry as a runner for the post-production house MPC in Soho, London. He quickly moved on to become a Producer/Director for an IP production company developing formats and documentaries for broadcast on network channels and internet streaming. His decision to go freelance to work on more personal film, documentary and art projects soon paid off with the success of his first independent production The Apology Line, an experimental art project that eventually became a short documentary he devised and shot with colleague and fellow film maker James Lees. The film went on to win a number of awards on the festival circuit including Prix UIP Best European Short Film at the Cork International Film Festival, and was shown at Cannes and Sundance 08. Since then he has worked on various short film and documentary projects that have ranged from Channel 4’s 3-minute wonder series and the BBC’s New Music Shorts scheme. He has just completed his first fiction short film as a writer/director, it was funded by the UK Film Council and will be screened at various film festivals through 2009/10.
The deadline just expired. This makes me sad.
Apology: Despite the fact that it would not have made this project reach its goal, I am sorry I didn't pledge more.
That's great, James. I feel it would be a hit online. "Text us your apologies". You'd have a ton of hilarious and heart warming material to use. It may be more accessible to people not wanting their voice recorded.
Best of luck with your project! I'll make a pledge in the coming weeks.
Hi Justus
It is a great idea and something we are keen to look into further if we can get the project launched. We have lots of great ideas for an online life for The Apology Line that we are keen to pursue.
Hi Rich
Many thanks for the comment. I have amended the project description as it is a good point!
This sounds like Stephen Colbert's "Atone phone". :P
James/William,
Might you guys include a bit about your desire to continue Allan Bridge's project in the kickstarter project description? I think it would go a long way in your efforts to raise funds from people familiar with the original apology line. It wasn't until I read the project comments did I see that you were in fact even aware of the previous apology line.
Might I suggest a website for this line as well that people could text? It would be similar to the Text From Last Night website, but people would text in their random apologies to be posted on the website.
Hi Jen
You are quite correct. It was Allan Bridge, a New York artist who was tragically killed in an accident in 1995. You are also correct in saying that his project finished at this point and it is one of our desires, as it was his I believe, that people continue the Apology project in some way. Whenever we are interviewed about the project we always reference Allan and describe how his original concept inspired us.
One of the principal motivations behind launching the Apology Line in the U.S. is to bring it back to where it all started. We could not imagine a more fitting location to hold the first Apology Line exhibition than Allan's very own New York!
This was already done by a US conceptual artist in the 1980s. http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/2.10/eword.html...
Of course I think his line was closed after he was killed in the late 1990s, so...
