The Wündershop wants to bring three revolutionary animated storybook apps to life!
What is the Wündershop?
The Wündershop is an up and coming production studio that specializes in experimental animation. We have developed an entirely new process that can make any painting, drawing, or photograph come to life! Instead of recreating each drawing frame by frame, or modeling the characters and backgrounds in a 3D program we are able to produce fully animated scenes out of a single source image. This way we don't have to try and match the look and feel of the artwork, we just use what the artist has already created. The idea is to try and retain as much of the original integrity of the artwork as possible while bringing the viewer a completely fresh and unique visual experience.
Folks out there said it would be cool if we could post a video showing the process that takes one illustration into a fully animated scene, so here it is!
It's great to be able to create animation like this, but only if there is a good use for it. We sat down to try and figure out how to introduce the world to this technique, and decided the best way to do this is in the form of animated storybook apps for the iPad (coming soon on everything else). After all, if you think back to when you were a child you might not remember your favorite storybook word for word, but I bet you can remember what the illustrations looked like. The story is very important but we believe it’s the illustrations that separate the good books from the great ones. So out of this the Wünderbook was born.
Of course there were thousands of amazing stories out there that we thought could make a great Wünderbook, but we couldn't just grab one out of the sky. There are laws, and rules, and regulations to contend with and no publishing company is going to let us turn their books into Wünderbooks without proving a few things first. That's why we were so excited to find out that the vast majority of Beatrix Potter's tales were in the public domain. Considering Beatrix is recognized by many as one of the greatest children's book authors and illustrators of all time, and her drawings paintings and stories are not only beautiful but hold a special place in all our hearts, we jumped at the opportunity to use one of her stories as the foundation for our first Wünderbook.
The Animated Tale of Benjamin Bunny was released in August of this year and overall we are very happy with it. Our goal was to give children something educational and entertaining and not pack the app full of distracting interactive bells and whistles. Taking great care to preserve the essence of the original storybook we aimed to develop a product that we believe even Mrs. Potter would approve of.
You're going to produce three Wünderbooks?
That's right, we don't mess around! The goal is to produce three more Beatrix Potter apps with the help of Kickstarter!
Here is a sneak peek we put together to give you a taste of The Animated Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher!
These books will be produced in the following order: First, The Animated Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, next The Animated Tale of the Tailor of Gloucester, and finally The Animated Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck. We have a nice head start on The Animated Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher. All of the animation is complete, but we want to spend more time developing new and different games and puzzles, and better, non-distracting ways of integrating them into the story. The next step is to get The Animated Tale of the Tailor of Gloucester competed. We want this one ready by Thanksgiving because it's perfect for the upcoming holiday season. That doesn't leave us a ton of time, but remember we know magic! Jemima Puddle-duck will be third, and should be the most sophisticated of the three. That's not to discount the quality of its predecessors, we just want to keep pushing the envelope on every app produced by innovating and refining each one so they keep getting better. All three books will be out by spring of 2013, as long as the Mayan's don't prevail.
What will the funds go towards?
Producing animated Wünderbook's is kind of spendy. Even though the books are in public domain we still need funds for things like music, voice over talent, subcontracting, development, and food. Although we have come a long way over the past year we have now stretched our shoestring budget as far as it will go and need additional capital to keep moving forward.
What if you raise extra money?
Score! No seriously, score! If we meet the $15,000.00 goal that would truly be amazing. It means that there are enough people out there that believe in us and our vision, but if we surpass this amount then that would be an extra dose of awesome. The more funds we raise the more we can focus on Wünderbooks and only Wünderbooks. Right now if a paying gig comes in it takes precedent and like every red-blooded American we would love to stop working for the man and just develop our own content!
Would you like to thank anyone special?
You know it! The first shout out goes to the fella's over at Code-Monkeys. They are the ones who take all of our animations and code them into the app. Basically, they rule the school! Next comes Anna-Parker Naples, not only did she provide our apps with the best voice over ever, she let us use some of it for our Kickstarter video, and we all know that British people just sound better! We also cant forget Dean Paris, or you may know him better as the Great Flydini! Dean helped with the creation of the video, and also does one heck of a job prepping files in Photoshop for our Wünderbooks! Let's not forget the Wünderkids. Thanks to Jude, Olyvia, and Colette Reff for being patient with their father as he annoyingly told them to hold still while he took their photos and recorded their voices. Finally, there’s you. A very special thanks goes out to all the Wünderbros and Wünderbunnies out there that contribute to the revolution by backing us. We just want you all to know you’re more than OK in our Wünderbook! Thanks so much!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The real challenge is time. Our goal is to have at least The Animated Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher and The Animated Tale of The Tailor of Gloucester out in time for the holidays. There is a ton of work to be done between now and then, but we hope that what you see here proves that we’re up to the task. This brings us to the risks we’re taking on. We risk long days, sleepless nights, and carpel tunnel syndrome but it’s all worth it when we get the job done. By pushing ourselves harder and setting the bar higher with each app produced we believe that not only will it pay off monetarily, but the end result will be something we can truly be proud of. Hope perseverance and caffeine have gotten us this far, so we’re not backing down if things start getting a little tough. Our attitude is bring it, what doesn’t kill you only grows you more chest hair!
