About this project
From Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mark Kitchell comes A Fierce Green Fire, the most comprehensive exploration of the environmental movement ever put on film. Ten years in the making, it tells the story about the people that arose to fight for change. It focuses on grassroots and global activism, spanning fifty years worldwide. It focus on people fighting to save their children, their land, their living planet; from halting dams at the Grand Canyon to battling 20,000 tons of toxic waste at Love Canal; from Greenpeace saving the whales to Chico Mendes and the rubbertappers saving the Amazon; from global activism to address climate change to the promise of transforming our civilization. Neither gloom and doom nor panacea, the film points towards reckoning and renewal, humanity learning to live in sustainable balance with the natural world that supports us.
Join us in bringing the film home! Most of the interviews are shot and archival material gathered. Writing and editing of a rough-cut was finished last year. Now, thanks to a grant from Sundance, fine-cutting has begun. It's a great time to get on board and see the film through the final phase of production. Our goal of $50,000 will enable the following work:
- Paying our editor to finish a fine-cut and "lock picture" -- completing the creative work on the film -- by the end of June.
- Filming the last interviews, including two in Brazil, one with former Brazilian Presidential candiate and champion of the environment Marina Silva, and the other with Mary Allegretti, the anthropologist who discovered and worked with Chico Mendes.
- Finishing archival research and mastering the incredible film we've found, as well as beginning work on animation and music.
A Fierce Green Fire weaves archival film together with interviews featuring many of the world's most prominent environmentalists:
Bill McKibben, environmentalist, professor, and creator of 350.org

Stewart Brand, founder of "Whole Earth Catalog," "Co-Evolution Quarterly" and author of Whole Earth Discipline

Joe Romm, author, physicist, climate expert, and editor of the blog Climate Progress
Paul Watson, founding member of Greenpeace and founder of Sea Shepherd

Amory Lovins, energy efficiency expert, scientist, and visionary of the soft path

Paul Hawken, author of The Ecology of Commerce, Natural Capitalism, and Blessed Unrest
Lois Gibbs, leader of Love Canal’s activism
Robert Bullard, environmental justice leader, author of Dumping in Dixie
Clips from our interviews -- the very best from the very brightest -- on a variety of environmental topics will be shared daily on our YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook pages. So, connect, follow, and learn more.
Additional information about the film -- and the ability to provide us with your e-mail address to stay in touch with us -- can be found on our website.
