Do You Remember is a nostalgic retro-styled RPG adventure that brings you back into a whimsical world of childhood dreams.
Here's the trailer without the ridiculous intro and all the technical talk!
*None of the graphics used in the game will be final.
All of us have an inner-child living within us. An inner-child that remembers the carefree days of youth that have been long eroded by the sands of time and change. And now, you've grown up, having to shoulder new responsibilities, new obligations, new duties. Under the weight of all the pressure and the mundane grind of daily life, the inner-child is squashed, and the magic is forgotten.
If you've had this feeling of longing for a time that is so long gone that you don't even remember if you dreamed it, this game is for you. That is what this game is about. That epic adventure that you always dreamed about when you were 10 years old.
Do You Remember is a retro-style 2D RPG with modern twists on a classic system that is designed to provide customized experiences to the player's gameplay decisions. Many will recognize that our graphical style and atmosphere are heavily reminiscent of beloved old-school hits such as Earthbound (Mother 2) and early Final Fantasy games. But we are bringing these classics into 2012 with modernized mechanics inspired by game mechanics like the time management from Dead Rising and the re-playable event jumping from Radiant Historia. A major focus of this game is to immerse the player into the nostalgia of their childhood while keeping each user experience unique and memorable.
You play as Nadore, a regular 5th grade elementary school kid who possesses infinite potential within himself.
Picture this: You are sitting in a dreary classroom, hazy from afternoon sleepiness. Suddenly, the school bell rings and the teacher says "class dismissed", and every kid remembers jumping for joy. That is how each of your adventures begin.
The choice of what to do with Nadore's life is entirely up to you. You can ask your in-game close friends to join in on your after-school adventures, or you could simply go at it alone. Nadore's world is filled with the mysterious and the whimsical; you'll find yourself meeting talking rats, fighting giant crayfish boxing champions, standing up to the neighborhood bully or discovering a girl's supernatural powers. Welcome to the world of Do You Remember!.
- Classically inspired graphical style
- Vast freedom of choice on main character customization
- Strategic turn based battle system
- NPC relationship management
- Quest based, multi-branching story structure
- Whacky, nostalgic minigames
- In fact, this game is made of PURE DISTILLED NOSTALGIA (100 proof)
The theme of the game is very simple: kids being kids, going on whacky adventures and doing fun stuff. But, players who take the time to pay attention to the small details of the plot will find something peculiar underneath the surface. Nadore's daily adventures are compelling enough by themselves but they are not the extent of what this game has to offer.
As the story moves forward, the player will encounter strange events which are all pieces of a puzzle that lead up to a major story thread that will have unimaginable consequences towards the end of the game. What began as a nostalgic slice-of-life will slowly be invaded by the weird and the surreal. Will you unravel the mystery behind Nadore's world?
Earlier we talked a bit about how we are planning to bring this game into the modern age. Being inspired by the classics is great, but we realize that we have to be aware of the evolution of gaming styles in order to make a great product. In conjunction with familiar mechanics like turn-based battle, RPG “leveling up” and epic dungeons, we are introducing a slew of new features. Here are some previews of some of them:
and time system: Do You Remember progresses with the advancement of Days. During each day, the NPCs in Nadore's world will be doing
different activities depending on the date and time of day. This also
means that Nadore has access to different quests depending on when or where he speaks to certain NPCs. Time will advance mostly when you complete quest objectives or engage in some activity that costs AP.
-AP system: At the beginning of each day, Nadore is given a set amount of AP (Action Points) he can spend. He can spend his AP for mainly two purposes. Improving his own character stats or recruiting party members. Kids are fickle and they may or may not get along with each other, it is up to you to decide whether or not to persuade them.
Nadore will get hungry during the span of a day. You can satisfy his
hunger by eating food. Having a hunger meter of zero will result in a
decline in Nadore's combat related stats. Also, eating is highly
encouraged because every food that Nadore consumes will permanently
raise his Vitality(HP). Nadore can either eat in restaurants or consume
food items. Eating consumes 30 minutes of Nadore's time.
-Crafting: Players will constantly come across children's science magazines throughout their journey. If Nadore's IQ stat is high enough to comprehend what is described in the book, he will be able to learn how to make certain items that will aid him during the battle. IQ stat can be raised both by leveling up or reading a book which costs time and AP points.
-Battle System: The battle is carried out in classical side view RPG style. All of Nadore's friends have different specialties but function similarly to familiar JRPG party members. However, Nadore functions very differently. Nadore functions using a stat called “Morale” which will change depending on his actions in battle. Nadore’s skill usage will be based on this bar. So Nadore's friends can perform their special moves at any time, but they won't be able to use it so often. While Nadore can use the moves as often as he desires once his morale bar reaches a certain amount.
-Quest, Scoring, and Journal: There are two types of quests. Each main quest will deplete roughly around 2 hours of Nadore's time while sub quests take 30 minutes. Main quest will usually feature a long dungeon adventure and exploring while side quest is mostly about doing small tasks in order to raise the relationship between NPCs. At the end of each day, Nadore has a recurring dream in which a mysterious entity named the Adjudicator will be giving Nadore a score by evaluating his actions throughout the day. Getting a high score in this review session will come with sometimes unique rewards. Later in the game, Nadore obtains a diary of memories which gives him access to a Ground-Hog-day-like mechanic allowing the player to re-play past days to unlock missed content, choose alternate paths or correct past mistakes.
-NPC relationships: Nadore’s actions towards NPCs will impact their behavior towards you, each other, and the story branch as the game progresses.
who is my partner in this project is currently living on my couch only
for the purpose of developing this game. He has quit his job to
completely devote his time for this game, and I'm using my personal
savings to keep both ourselves and the cat alive. Our main goal with
taking these risks is to actually form a video game studio that will bring you
more video games like Do You Remember. We actually have several games in various stages of completion up our
sleeves and the one we chose to be our debut title was Do you Remember. But, we are not just asking you to support a game company made by 2 random guys you've never even heard of. We are dedicated to make this debut project the best that it can be. By helping us, you are kickstarting the quality and polish of the final product which, in turn, will help us kickstart our own game studio.
Do You Remember is actually my dream project that I've been working on during my free time since my college days. It has gone through countless system and graphical overhauls and I even once released a half hour demo. However, due to complications in life, I had to stop making the game and move on. Initially, this game was being developed in Japanese and aimed for release into the Japanese game community (http://yuijegnan1.blog59.fc2.com/page-1.html).
But, because of the awesome reputation of the kickstarter community, we decided to go for a US release first. Honestly, I'm only able to attempt this project again because of kickstarter. The funding may actually give us some breathing room for both Malifaux and I to fully concentrate on making this game.
Of course, we are not just asking for money so that we can feed ourselves. The money also needs to be used for clearing legal hurdles such as incorporation and contracting professionals for music and art. We are planning to contract the same guy who's music you can hear in the trailer. I'm also fully aware that I'm not the best spriter. While I think I can devote myself to improving my spriting skill, I believe the process will be much faster if I can hire/contract some pixel artist to touch up my already existing assets and point me to new directions and styles.
As many will notice, this project is currently being developed in the RPG Maker VX engine. This is for 2 main reasons: Firstly, as stated earlier, this game was originally conceived and developed in Japanese on the Japanese VX engine. So, we are already having to do a bunch of translation of dialogue, scripts and code. Secondly, what would kickstarter be if not a platform for unproven artists and developers to show what they can do and get support for it? We have always wanted to port this project to a new engine, but we neither have the money nor the time.
But this is where you guys come in!! The final quality of the assets including art, music, and programming is entirely dependent on your support. Scripting for non-linear events, which is the core of our idea, is far from easy, even on something like RPG maker. Our main goal of $11,000 is the absolute minimum required for the game to even exist. But, if we get more, one of the first things we are looking at is an engine re-haul.
Do You Remember is a very ambitious game created by just two guys with a love for video games and an idea to touch people's hearts. We need all the support we can get and I can assure you, this game will not disappoint when it is delivered to your hands.
