About this project

SHANNON GILLEN + GUESTS, a dance theater company based in NYC has been invited to present an excerpt of its latest project, BOTLEK at Dance New Amsterdam as part of RAW Directions, February 9th-11th and again at Joyce SoHo with New Dance Alliance March 13th. This project involves acclaimed dance artists Genna Baroni, Xan Burley, Frances Chiaverini, Janna Diamond, Spencer Dickhaus, and Kristin Swiat. The company is thrilled to be developing its fourth evening length piece with such an extraordinary cast and has been hard at work in the studio since November.

In our current economic climate, funding for dance is particularly strained. Individual support has always been a cornerstone of SGG productions, and now more than ever your donation, made right here on Kickstarter, will make this project possible. With your support, these incredible dancers get paid, costumes are bought and lights are designed.

There are some great ways we'd like to reward you for your support, including a special invitation to Shannon's Advanced Modern Class at Dance New Amsterdam (to either partake or observe). There are plenty of other fun rewards for donating, so check out the level that works for you. Our heart felt thanks!

About BOTLEK: BOTLEK is an in depth, physical analysis of the international shipping industry. Fascinated by the scale and complexity of maritime trade this project delves into the idea of shared boundaries, geometric stacks, unpredictable events in isolated conditions, skilled and unskilled labor, boredom, role-playing, and visual disruption phenomena ranging from parallax to sea blindness. The soundscore is comprised of pre-recorded found sound in addition to original text and excerpts from journalist Rose George and novelist Alain de Botton.

About SHANNON GILLEN + GUESTS: The company utilizes different physical and contextual standpoints within a space to construct layered feeling states. These feeling states are rooted in questioning the emotional life embedded in form, content and location. Rigorous choreographic experimentation and a commitment to the emotional spontaneity of the moment are ultimately what shape the context and performance of the work. Being expressionistic by nature, the creative process is indelibly shaped by the presence of the performers. www.shannongillen.com
