24 hours of street games and original sports, changing the way we think about the city, each other, & what it means to be a grown-up.
What's the Steel City Games Fest?
The Steel City Games Fest is a 24-hour festival of new and original street games, sports, and other physical games, and is returning to Pittsburgh August 27-28. The festival celebrates the power of play to revitalize urban space, foster community, and explore creativity in unorthodox ways.
At last year's festival, 20 games played out over three days. This year, 24 games will debut over 24 hours, including urban games like The Signal (an all-night chase played out on the streets and over the radio), new sports like the award-winning Silverball (human-sized pinball played on a hill), and table top and parlor games like Revolucion! (a government-toppling version of Monopoly).
Why do my contributions matter?
The more people we can get together to play, the better the games will be. The first SCGF had 150 people come out to play, and this year we're shooting to double that. We need your help to get the word out. Your contributions will help us put together the posters, radio advertisements, and promotional games that we'll use to tell people about the festival. You'll also help keep admission prices low by giving us the means to rent space, buy special equipment for games, and purchase insurance that would otherwise require us to charge high admission fees.
On a bigger scale, you're helping to create fun for yourself and for others, and making the city better in the process. There's been a lot of research over the last few years examining the positive effects games have on us - take a look at Jane McGonigal's TED talk about it, and look at what other festivals like Come Out and Play, Hide and Seek, and the IgFest have inspired. Obscure Games, and the Steel City Games Fest, puts what we've learned about the power of play into practice, and makes the city not just a place to live, but a place to feel alive. So join us. It's game time.
What kind of Rewards can I get?
You can see a complete list of rewards on the right hand side, which includes something we're giving to everyone: +1's. +1's (plus-one's) are bonus points that people can send to other people for doing good in the real world. We're using PlusOneMe.com (featured in Jane McGonigal's excellent book Reality is Broken) to email all of our backers different +1's based on whatever they'd like to contribute. It's our way of saying thanks, in game terms.
At all reward levels, you'll be guaranteed admission to the festival, without having to pay any additional admission fees. As contributions increase, you can get rewards including copies of the ZombieBall poster above as well as the excellent and hilarious graphic t-shirts by designer Steph Bercht. Check 'em out below!
