Sarah Jaye and Terry Shusta's new web series directed by Allison Rohm, is raising funds to create the first compelling episode.
THE IDEA
In January of 2012, Terry Shusta and myself(Sarah Jaye) began writing a script. The original seed of the idea was that I really wanted to write a story set in Venice Beach, CA. It's a unique experience living in the city of Los Angeles, a city that everyone in the world knows about and wants to see. Then bring it down to that little corner of the LA landscape known as Venice Beach. An iconic, legendary "ghetto by the sea" inhabited by struggling artists, millionaire artists, and everyone in between. I can't imagine a more rich environment for storytelling.
As our script took many twists and turns down its evolutionary path, we became obsessed with one particular concept. What happens when someone living in this carefree, hang ten, dirty yet beautiful beachside town gets smacked in the face with something so real and sobering that they have to snap out of their paradisical unreality and face the truth head on? That's where Lena comes in. Our main character is a young woman living in Venice who finds out she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
We all deal with problems differently, and in our own time. Some of us procrastinate and push them aside, some of us tackle them head on. We hide, we drink, we pray, we screw, we run, and we share. Personally, I have friends whose lives have been deeply affected by breast cancer. We all miss and honor those who have lost their lives to cancer. We celebrate those who have survived it. I'm hoping to tell one woman's story, yet every woman's story.
This is the world of BEYOND ME. The beach, the boardwalk, the canals and the characters of Venice Beach are all there. "All the world's a stage..." The setting is a leading player, and Lena and her friends are the co-stars. We hope you can help us take this project from page to screen. Thank you for your generosity.

Some aspects of production will be challenging...
LOCATIONS
Locations in Venice aren't always easy to acquire permits for, and once you have one, the cops sometimes hassle you if you're drawing a crowd or obstructing foot traffic. Shooting in a timely manner without having to do a lot of retakes requires rehearsal and planning. Some serious meetings will be taking place to ensure that the director, the cinematographer, the lighting and sound designers, and the actors are all exactly where they need to be in order to shoot fast. After all, in crowded places like the boardwalk and the beach(did someone say ocean?), anything could happen. We'll have to be on our very best behavior to accomplish this shoot. And permits don't come cheap!
MUSIC
The question of music comes into play. Although we plan on using most of our music directly from Venice artists, some music licensing may be complicated and require serious fees and paperwork to attain! After all, Jim Morrison is a Venice icon. How amazing would it be to incorporate music by "The Doors"? The very generous Matt Ellis loaned us music for this Kickstarter video, but it's only fair to reimburse the artists.
CREATIVE
Creative challenges may come up! What if a scene needs to be tweaked or something improvisational arises on set? Did we mention the funny parts? You never know exactly what challenges may present themselves as the characters come to life for the first time. What if someone's costume tears, or it rains on shooting day(highly unlikely I mean hey it's LA)...but it could happen! A little cash to deal with unpredictable circumstances is a necessity.
Once we have all of our funding in place, we'll set shoot dates and finalize casting. In the pre-production process we'll select locations, prepare costumes and set pieces, and rehearse with the actors. During the shoot we'll have a great crew on hand to help out with all of the details: lighting, sound, set, hair and makeup...And after we've wrapped we'll get straight to editing so YOU can see what we've done with your generous investment ASAP.
