Today the holy month of Ramadan begins. During this month, we are going to be doing regular postings, uploading excerpts from the film, and writing about the significance of Ramadan. We would love it if you, our backers, would forward these postings to anyone who you think might be interested in our project. We are still reaching for our goal!
One of the scenes in our film that is a hands-down, all-time favorite is a class for little girls on the Five Pillars of Islam. These little girls are talking about big concepts—heaven, hell, and believers and non-believers. This class is typical of some of the basic information that young children are learning in Houda’s mosque—similar to basic concepts that most children learn in all the Abrahamic traditions.
As you’ll see in the clip, the Five Pillars of Islam are: 1. reciting the shahada (“There is no God but God and Mohammad is His messenger”) 2. daily prayers, salat 3. fasting during Ramadan, 4. almsgiving or, zakāt, and 5. the pilgrimage to Mecca, or hajj, at least once in a lifetime.
The Five Pillars are a guide for Muslims, but Houda always reminds her students that just doing these things is not enough. She tells her students that it is most important to treat people well, and be kind. Simply praying or giving alms and not feeling the meaning of these acts is not enough.
