APEX is new large-scale site-specific installation, created by LILIENTHAL|ZAMORA in collaboration with the Intiman Theatre at the Seattle Center.  Made possible by a 2012 CityArtist Grant from the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, APEX focuses on the re-invigoration of the IntimanTheatre Courtyard, visually responding to the building's courtyard atrium.  Partnering with the Intiman, LILIENTHAL|ZAMORA activates this newly programmed summer festival space from July 1-September 1, 2012.

Currently, the courtyard architecture creates an enormous sky portal, with four high walls and a widecentral opening.  At the center of this atrium sits a bronze sculpture fountain by James Fitzgerald, withmany strong vertical elements reaching twenty-one feet into the sky.  APEX features a bold florescent sculpturefloating above the courtyard, within the center of the portal, creating a framing of the sky aboveand repeating the square shape of the sculpture’s base below.  This hovering square of light creates the impression ofa new ceiling centered within the large open-air courtyard, encouraging more intimate space for gathering,conversation, and art-viewing.  Mounted to the inside of the column arcade are 16 foot long colored florescent tubes, their light connecting the installation to the existing architecture creating an introspective, cohesive environment. 

Central to APEX is the wide public visibility the piece will gain during daily and nightlyattendance to various art and theater events presented by both the Intiman Theatre and the SeattleCenter.  In July 2012, APEX will transform the Intiman's courtyard into a vibrant center for Seattle's arts communityand a beacon for the public.
