One dark and endless road. One highway truck stop. One run down motel room. One woman in search of a fresh start...
"A Fresh Start" is a Neo-Noir, senior thesis film written by Michael T. Moran. It follows the story of Jake, a young man who has been abandoned at a truck-stop diner in rural america where he meets Miranda, an aging beauty in search of a better life. After inviting him back to her room, it soon becomes clear that things aren't as innocent as they seem.
Shooting starts September 30th!
What the money is needed for:
Transportation: To avoid using the same kinds of city locations seen in countless SCAD student films, as well as to give the film more authenticity, we are planning on shooting outside downtown Savannah in an authentic middle of nowhere truck stop motel. Because of this, we will need transportation for equipment cast and crew.
Props and Wardrobe: Because this is a short film, the concept for the characters wardrobes is that they will help to illustrate the backstory for that particular character, and help root them in the world as being on the road and having come from somewhere else. This is why we have budgeted a great deal towards finding authentic costumes that would not only fit the characters but help illustrate them more three dimensionally. Though not many, there are a few very important props needed that are imperitive to the story but mentioning would give away important plot details.
Location Rentals: As mentioned, the film will be mostly shot in a motel where we are going to required to rent two rooms, (one for shooting in, the other for staging equipment as well as the makeup and wardrobe departments), which will not cost much but over the course of two weekends may add up.
Camera Equipment: A very significant element of filmmaking is reliant on the use of good camera equipment. Although lighting equipment would most likely be accessible through SCAD, the camera equipment itself is a more complicated issue. We plan to shoot on the Cannon 5D Mark II and although the camera itself may be accessible without having to pay too much, lenses and other attachments necessary for a truly visually appealing film may have to be rented outside of the school.
Special Effects: Without giving away too much, we do need money to put towards some in camera physical effects. Hint: It may involve but is not limited to the use of lots and lots of fake blood. While we could have approached more economically by putting in the effects digitally, as filmmakers, the director and his crew came to the decision that a level of authenticity is lost when modern films rely too heavily on digital effects.
Food and Catering: A hard-working crew is a hungry crew! Since most of our crew is volunteering time and energy to help this film become a reality. We need to make sure to feed them well and often!
