About this project
“The Last Sin” is the title of my senior exhibit at George Mason University. I will be graduating this spring with a BFA in digital art. For my senior exhibit I will combine elements of both sculpture & digital work.
CONCEPT & ART IN A NUTSHELL
The concept reexamines the concept of Original Sin & presents the idea that the sin was not one of disobedience but one of consumption of information. In today's world many scientists warn that humans stand the brink of their own destruction through overpopulation, etc. This forces us to examine what our Last Sin will be. I believe it is the dissemination of information.
The focal point of the exhibit will be The Tree of Life v2.0. The tree will be constructed from computer cables and feature 3 digital frames which display humanities’ achievements, downfalls, and statistical information about humanities’ impending destruction. There will be 4 red apples made of computer cables and 1 copper apple all of which will connect to the tree via USB cable.
A DNA molecule made of copper and USB cables will show Adam & Eve’s instant alteration when they ate the apple.
Additionally, when examining this concept it raised the issue of the true nature of God, heaven, the devil & hell. These issues will be explored in two 24" x 36" digital prints, one for heaven, one for hell. Heaven will show the angels protesting against science & intellectualism while burning books; Hell will show scientists hard at work in the Library of Alexandria. The books being burned in Heaven's print will be physically present surrounding the Hell's print.
FUNDS
GMU provides no funds for student exhibits nor does it allow us to use work created in any class so we are entirely on our own to create and fund the exhibit during the course of a single semester. The funds raised through Kickstarter will be used to purchase the digital frames for the Tree of Life v2.0, printing and framing of Digital Heaven and Hell, and for all other supplies such as cabling, lumber, publicity materials and other expenses directly related to the creation of artwork for this exhibit.
DOCUMENTATION & MORE INFORMATION
As part of the project requirements, each stage must be fully documented. I have already started a blog to document each stage of the process: http://thelastsinexhibit.blogspot.com/ The first post contains the course syllabus and full project proposal. The proposal outlines in full detail the entire exhibit, the proposed artwork (including preliminary sketches) and layout for the exhibit space: http://thelastsinexhibit.blogspot.com/2010/09/last-sin.html The exhibit is scheduled to run at GMU's School of Art building from 12/13/2010 thru 12/18/2010. During the earliest phases the project, prior to the start of the semester, I sought the council of local artists and curators which has led to a potential opportunity to show this exhibit at a local gallery after the senior show is over. I will post details on the blog listed above once dates have been set.
