Update #10: An Update!

Posted on July 21, 2010

Hey all. Long time no update. Sorry about that. We've been busy. Busy at work on this project and busy at work in "real" life (both Sarah and myself have switched jobs this past several months). But I wanted to let you know how things are going and to let you all know what we've not forgotten about you.

So how are things going? Slowly, but progress is being made. I'm writing and Sarah is editing photos. She's probably a bit further along than I at this point. As for myself, I may have underestimated how long it takes to write a book. I guess I can never again criticize when a band or author takes seemingly forever to complete a project (okay Elephant 6 Collective/Jeff Mangum...I forgive you....this time....). Anyways, if I had to guess, I'd say I'll be finished closer to winter rather than the late summer/early fall I'd originally planned on. Sarah's book of photography will likely be done some time in the fall.

In light of this, we'd like to know how you'd like to to roll out the rewards. Would you like to get things as their ready? For instance, send out posters soon-ish, then coffee table books in the fall perhaps, and my book in the winter? Etc? Or would you prefer everything to go out at once?

I think that's all for now. Hit us up with any thoughts, comments, concerns, or how you think the rest of the baseball season will play out (I fear my Mets are cratering now....sigh).

      Hey Eddie (and everybody else)

Stuff is progressing well now. I think we're going to send out stuff in waves after all. Sarah's book is all but done and some of the other stuff is close to ready to go out, so we hope to start sending stuff soon. The book is still in progress (it was the largest thing to tackle) but I've made some serious headway on it.

I cannot thank you (and everybody else!) enough for your patience. I know this is taking way longer than we originally said.

Update #9: Road Trip? Check.

Posted on March 31, 2010

Oh hi y'all.

We're back from our epic road trip across (half of) America. We're almost out of recovery mode, as being cooped up in a Chevy HHR isn't as comfortable as it sounds. Actually, it doesn't sound comfortable at all, does it?

All kidding aside, we had a wonderful time with Reba, our rental car. Until she died on us in Memphis. We gave the ol' broad a jolt or two and she was fine for the rest of the trip.

Now it's go time. Tom and I have begun the transcribing process, and the writing should begin early April. As for the photography book, all photos have been uploaded and editing/retouching began early this week.

As for all you donors who are expecting postcards... well, guess what? You'll be getting them soon!

More updates to come as Tom and I settle in and kick ourselves into gear.

Update #7: Almost there...

Posted on March 1, 2010

10 days left and we've only $160 to go before reaching our goal. As I've already said, we're all really blown away by the generosity of people and how well Kickstarter works to help get creative projects off the ground.

Even though we only have $160 until we hit our goal of $1,400, I would encourage people to keep donating. Simply put, the more money we raise, the better we can make this project and the cooler the rewards will be. We're working on getting some better video equipment now, something which can happen if we raise a couple hundred more. So, keep telling your friends and keep spreading the word!

Update #6: Filmmaker Update

Posted on February 28, 2010

We have some sad news to report. Our filmmaker, John Kwamya, has had to drop off the project due to a death in his family.. Our thoughts and prayers are with him at this time.

We've worked hard to find a replacement and we're proud to announce today the addition of two remembers to our project: Rahawa Haile and Chris Miller.

Rahawa is a graduate of the University of Florida and is an incredibly knowledgeable and talented filmmaker. She's also the author of The Pop Filter (http://thepopfilter.com) and probably knows more about music than I do.

Chris is a saxophone player and multi-instrumentalist who is in his final semester of his Master's Degree in Jazz Performance at SUNY Purchase. He has recorded, performed, and toured internationally as a soloist and with groups including Doug Wamble, Blueground Undergrass, The Codetalkers, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.

Both will be working on creating daily video content and a short documentary for our project. In addition, they will create a full length documentary about the music industry this summer. This film will not be directly associated with Sound Through Sight, but it will feature contributions from all four of us. You will hear more about this separate project this summer.

Sarah and I are incredibly psyched to have both of them as a part of this project and we're looking forward to their contributions.

When John dropped off our trip we lost the use of his car, the incredibly 1986 diesel Benz. Thankfully, my aunt and Woodlake Travel (http://www.woodlaketravel.com) in Houston, TX were able to get us a great deal on a rental car. We are incredibly grateful to them for their help.

Update #5: On twitter?? We need your help! Let's get Chuck Klosterman Involved!

Posted on February 24, 2010

Hey all

One of my biggest influences in this project has been Chuck Klosterman. I've long been a huge fan of his columns and books (Spin Magazine hasn't been the same since he was fired...) and I've found that I pattern my own writings on his work more than almost any other author. No other writer today is able to write in such an engaging, interesting and humorous way about pop culture.

Not only has he influenced my writing but he's responsible for the whole idea behind this project. The entire road trip approach to this project was directly inspired by Killing Yourself To Live.

I can say with absolute confidence that without Chuck Klosterman, Sound Through Sight would not exist.

THEREFORE, I want to come full circle. I can be a fan of symbolism and I see a great opportunity for a "passing of the torch" moment here. Or more accurately, a light-my-torch-from-your-own-still-brightly-glowing-torch moment. I want to have Chuck Klosterman help fund our project.

What's great about the internet is that there is an easy way for us to join together and get his attention. If we combine our voices, if we can get Who in Who-ville to shout at the same time, we can make this happen.

Here is what I need you to do TODAY (Wednesday). Go on to twitter and tweet at @CKlosterman. Tell him to help fund this project. Here is what I'm going to tweet at him: " hey @CKlosterman, we want to get you to help fund the Sound Through Sight project! http://bit.ly/kickstartersts ". Feel free to tweet whatever you want, so long as you direct it at him and you include the link to the Kickstarter page. The more people that do this, the louder and more noticeable our voices will become online and the more likely we are to get Chuck Klosterman supporting this project!

Lets make it happen!

Update #2: wow...

Posted on February 17, 2010

We are two days into this and we've already raised 56% of our goal.

We are blow away by this.

This may sound cliche but we are honored by each and every donation. That you would give us your time, money, and support, it has left us speechless. This goes doubly so for the people who we don't even know who have generously donated. I've looked through enough Kickstarter projects to realize this is a common feeling for project creators but that doesn't do anything to prepare you for the rush of when it actually happens.

Thanks to all who have supported thus far, thanks to all who will support, and onward to reaching our goal!
