Help this community-supported residency program build studios and improve its community kitchen garden!
What is the Shandaken Project?
The Shandaken Project is a community-supported residency program in the Catskills. Beginning this summer, artists, writers, curators, and more will be invited to live and work on our 250-acre grounds for free. We honor experimentation and process as ends in and of themselves, so our residents can use their time as they choose. They give back to the project by helping in our communal vegetable garden, from which they are invited to harvest. Visit www.shandakenproject.org to learn more.
What are we fundraising for?
We have a gorgeous property, a nice house to live in, and a great group of members to support our operating costs—but we need studios for our residents, and some capital improvements in our gardens! Our goal is to raise funds for one-time costs including: building three private studios, fencing our kitchen gardens, and amending the soil in our garden areas. With your help, we can start our first season with great work areas for our residents and strong, healthy plants to feast on!
Learn more about the studios:
Artist Kant Smith has designed incredibly functional yet incredibly cheap studios for us. They can be erected anywhere and later be disassembled for transportation to another location. And the best part is, they can be re-purposed for manifold practices: from painting to pottery to writing and more. The blueprints for these fantastic ten-by-fifteen-foot cabins will be made available as a public resource on the Shandaken Project website—so anyone with a power drill and some gumption can build one themselves!
What's this party that I can buy a ticket to?
On July 28, we're hosting a party up at Shandaken! We've got a lake and 250 acres to play with, so grab your tent and some shorts to join us for swimming, hiking, a bonfire, and a late-night performance by a special guest. We'll have beers and BBQ available to buy or you can bring your own. Donate at the $50 level or beyond for a ticket to camp on the property that night, so you don't have to drive home after seeing the midnight performance by Bruno Coviello of Light Asylum. The rain date is the following weekend. Where will this all take place? Check it out!:
What are these mixtapes all about?
We are so thrilled that five cultural luminaries are generously supporting the project by making mixtapes that you can receive as thank-you gifts for your donations! Each mixtape is a playlist of about an hour's worth of music, and they are offered as digital downloads so you can put them right into your iTunes or MP3 device, or even burn a CD. When our Kickstarter campaign is over, you will be sent an email asking which mixtape/s you would like. Then you can listen to them as your drive up to our party! The playlists will be made by...
- Vince Aletti: a preeminent critic, curator, and historian of photography. He was the first writer to cover disco music, and is the author of The Disco Files 1973–1978: New York's Underground, Week by Week.
- Bob Nickas: a writer and curator who also DJs and has his own record label, From the Nursery, with recent releases from Adam McEwen and the Melvins.
- Jory Rabinovitz: a young artist who DJs as Jar Jar Whatever. His thumping party music usually includes remixes that will carve new pathways in your brain.
- NEW CONTRIBUTOR!!! Susanne Oberbeck a.k.a. No Bra: a musician whose work combines industrial, hip hop, punk, rock'n'roll, and electronic; and whose intense performances transgress as many gender as genre boundaries.
- LAST CONTRIBUTOR REVEALED!!!!! VITO ACCONCI: a polymath whose work in the fields of art and architecture is known the world over. Music is an integral part of his process, and his mixtape will be an aural tour of some of that which has influenced him most deeply.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
The Shandaken Project is ENTIRELY supported by people like you! Our model ensures that real members of the creative community—working artists, art professionals, academics, and other critical thinkers and cultural producers—give us our mandate directly, through their financial and intellectual support. So it's up to you to make sure that your peers have a place for process and experimentation! We invite you to learn more about our philosophies and unique structure by clicking here, and we hope to see you on the 28th!
BY CAR: The residency grounds are about two hours by car away from midtown NYC; and forty-five minutes by car from Hudson, NY. Please visit http://www.shandakenproject.org/aboutdirections.html for driving directions.
BY BUS: There is an Adirondack Trailways bus that will pick you up in NYC and drop you off in Phoenicia, about five minutes by car from the residency grounds. We may provide transportation to and from Phoenicia for the BBQ. Please inquire at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please see our $75 and $150 donation levels. At the $75 level, we will provide a tent for you. At the $150 level, we will provide a tent and two sleeping bags.
We will have beers and BBQ for sale during the party. Everything will be reasonably priced—but you're welcome to bring your own! We'll have a grill set up for guests' use—but BYO cooler!
There will be scheduled activities like lawn games, hikes, a bonfire, a late-night performance by Bruno Coviello of Light Asylum, and more. But there are hundreds of acres of hiking trails, a spring-fed lake, and the whole Catskills State Park to explore on your own!
