Friedrich Kirschner is a filmmaker, visual artist and software developer. He re-purposes computer games and realtime animation technology to create animated narratives and interactive performances.
His work has been shown at various international animation festivals and exhibitions, including the Laboral Gameworld exhibit in Gijon, the American Museum of the Moving Image in New York, the Ottawa international Animation festival and the Seoul Media Art Biennale. In addition he curates machinima film screenings all over the place and was the director of the Machinima Filmfest in New York in 2008, during his fellowship at the Eyebeam Art and Technology Center. He is currently bustling with activity at the p.irateship in Somerville, MA.
Just got my Moviesandbox package. WOOT WOOT! Danke Sehr!
Never mind about your timing. I'm a programmer myself and thought your schedule were a little tight ;) Amazing though if 1.0 hits stores by End of October ;)
Hey Steve, I am preparing a longer update and wanted to post on the weekend but didn't finish yet. I'll have it up tonight or tomorrow!
Hey there, can you provide an update please?
Hi Friedrich!
Your video's are the best ever! Can't wait to play with Moviesandbox!
So glad we're supporting this project.
Friedrich I work mostly with Ubuntu these days but I do some with Fedora and Debian. Since Ubuntu is based on Debian that package will probably work. I do have a WindowsXP VM but i rarely ever need to fire it up.
Hey Troy,
I will start work on the Linux version as soon as my two months of work begin. I will be posting a timeline for my work this week. What version of Linux are you using? A friend of mine recently compiled a Debian package and I will work with Ubuntu.
Any idea on the time frame for the Linux version? I recently gave my mac to my dad so I am Linux only for the foreseeable future.
Hey Donna, (and everyone who backed the project)
thank you so very much! I am super-happy to have reached my goal! Thanks so much to all of you!
Best wishes, Friedrich! I just pledged and I'm looking forward to see the software develop. Looks like you reached your goal!! Great things to come for sure!
Hey jdougan,
Unfortunately, the way moviesandbox treats 3D data (as particles instead of triangles) is kinda unique and hard to export. I am thinking of ways to export stuff, but so far, haven't come up with a good idea yet. It's a thing I want to do though, at some point, as it would be nice to interface with the Makerbot people too.
As for animation, it wouldn't be too hard to implement a BVH exporter (that I think you can use in Second-Life). But it's not on the list for 1.0, sorry.
I'm interested in using this to generate avatar animations for a virtual world project I'm working on. What export options will there be initially? I know it's not a focus for the first build but some sense of where you're going with it would help.
Good luck, Friedrich! I've pledged what I can and will watch with interest as the days count down.
Friedrich,
Thanks for getting back to me! That's great that Movesandbox is realtime. I need to play around with it ASAP. I want to integrate live 2D cameras with 3D models and animation. So I'd have a camera or two pointing at things in front of green screen, bring them in, key out the screens, and integrate them with 3D characters being puppeted (with the Kinect) or otherwise animated. I've been working on a very janky hand-built system for this as part of my thesis at NYU ITP, but it would be great to be able to use (and hopefully contribute to) and existing project.
I've messed about a bit with writing my own chroma key shaders as well as doing it procedurally in Open Frameworks. I've never added advanced features like edge blurring and clamping, though. Those would be great. Being able to integrate it with motion controlled 3D models would be amazing and exactly what I need.
Help me get started on the forums...I'd love to talk more about this!

Hey Greg,
thanks for your comment and support! And thanks for the heads up about the forum - I'll look into that ASAP.
To clarify: Yes, Moviesandbox is all realtime. And all the video I am posting are all filmed in realtime using a program called FRAPS.
As for chroma keying - do you want to chroma key things in 3D? I am not sure I understand. So far, I do not have image-based filters implemented, but it wouldn't be hard to write a shader for a video-texture that does chroma-keying if you wanted to.
This is an awesome project! I've been experimenting a lot with animation, compositing, motion capture with the kinect, etc. and this looks like a really fun way to integrate and play with some of these ideas. I'm a happy backer! Quick couple of questions as I don't seem to be able to register for an account on the forum (the anti-automated registration image doesn't show up for me):
Is it possible to do real time work with Moviesandbox? In the explainer video, you give the illusion of real time work, but it looks like it is maybe rendered out in advance. Is there a live mode?
Is it possible to do chroma keying in Moviesandbox? Poking around the wiki, I noticed some discussion of chromakeying in the section on the Character Recorder but I was wondering if it was more widely available. I'd love to be able to do some basic compositing in the app along with the other tools.
Thanks for the great project! Really excited to play with it and see how it develops!

Hi Matt,
thanks for your comment. I didn't check SketchUp in a long time, but I am well aware that it's a powerful modelling tool. I do have a very rudimentary COLLADA importer with texture coordinates and bone-structures in place. I would make sure that you will be able to use that, but im-/exporting is not a huge focus for Version 1.0.
If you want to discuss specifics, please feel free to visit the Moviesandbox forum at forums.moviesandbox.net and we can take the discussion there.
Question - maybe not the right place to ask, but wondering what kind of interoperability this world has with Sketchup, since it's becoming the de-facto source for quick 3D objects via the 3D warehouse. Also, the parametric modelling and behavioural scripting in Sketchup is starting to evolve, and hooks into that might be very cool.... thoughts?
Hey friedrich! I jut randomly found this! Nice to see you are getting moviesandbox rockin!
Hi Friedrich! Good luck, I hope you get full funding (and more!).
Man, amazing! I wish I had money to send! I will tell people about it that is all I can do!
I think Friedrich's secret is his totally calm and focused demeanor. I imagine it's what allows him to do so many projects and do them so well. Moviesandbox is really great.
You truly are the master of multitasking.
Good luck!!
A very nice project.
