Sneak peek at ADV550
The air fills with tension, and there is a subdued crackling sound. A blue aura forms about your lantern, and small sparks jump from the lantern to the ground. The aura fades away after several seconds, and your lamp is once again shining brightly.
Good Monday morning to everybody!
The comments page has been busy lately, due to my soliciting suggestions for stretch goals in the last update. I decided to respond to some of these comments over on my BGG Designer Diary (this post), since my responses tend to be huge walls of text. That post is about the mechanics of light and darkness in Colossal Cave: The Board Game, and what else I might do with light and darkness in the expansion.
Speaking of the expansion, with only two weeks left in the Kickstarter campaign, it's time to roll out some photos of the ADV550 prototype. These cards aren't part of the base game; they're part of the expansion, which you can get by pledging at the $55 level and higher.

Here we see two new Magic Words (the expansion contains four); a new Treasure (the expansion contains eleven); and an entertainingly nasty new sort of Reaction card. We also see the Secret New Mechanic! That mechanic is a new type of card, the "Location", which is added to the map when it's played. In this way the deepest rooms of the cave are often inaccessible for the first half of the game... until you've explored the cave deep enough to discover them. To compensate for making the cave deeper, there are some additional means of traveling quickly from A to B — some of which are not Magic Words!
The cards in the ADV550 expansion are based on Dave Platt's Adventure 550, also known as Adventure 3. Sorry, I don't know of anywhere it's playable online, although I will probably be trying to change that soon.
Please continue to follow my Twitter and my Designer Diary blog for day-to-day information about Colossal Cave. And tell your friends! Let's see if we can crack $9,000 this week.

@Foolhardy: Nope, highly unlikely. $55 is the "I like this idea so much I'm pledging $55 to see it happen!" level, and the reward for that level of dedication is you get the expansion, plus a *bonus* extra copy of the game to donate to your game library or sell online or whatever. Think of it that way and see if it makes you want to jump up that extra level. :)

Any chance of adding in a pledge level for just one copy and the expansion?
Creator Arthur O'Dwyer on May 7, 2012
And no, I don't know yet what the prices are going to be on shop.gamesalute.com. For now, if you're worried about prices, you'll have to make your own judgment as to whether the Kickstarter rewards are priced below MSRP... but I'm pretty sure they are. :)

@Joshua: Yes. It is likely that they'll have art, somehow. The current design meshes well with the prototype board but definitely doesn't mesh with the final board art!
@Oregon: You are correct. Although I prefer to think of it as, there's no way to preorder the expansion cards without pledging at least $55 to the project, and then you get a bonus copy of the game into the bargain! :) You'll be able to order both game and expansion from shop.gamesalute.com once the Kickstarter is over and the game is actually in production.

Am I correct that there is no way to get the expansion cards without buying two copies of the game?
Creator Joshua Sauer on May 7, 2012
You KNOW what I'm going to have to ask, right? About the new location cards?

And if you follow my Twitter already and are wondering why I didn't plug http://quuxplusone.github.com/Advent/ in this update... it's because apparently the dwarf/pirate movement code is still buggy, which renders the game unwinnable. I'm working on it, and will definitely announce it loudly when it's done.
