About this project

Las Rubias del Norte was started seven years ago, when Allyssa Lamb and Emily Hurst decided to quit their classical choir and start a group of their own. The group’s sound quickly veered off its classical course, incorporating Boleros, Peruvian waltzes, Andean huaynos and Cuban Guajiras. The result played like a dreamy soundtrack with classical harmonies set to a Latin beat. Our two albums, Panamericana and Rumba Internationale, were praised by the New Yorker, NPR’s Weekend Edition and A&E’s Breakfast with the Arts.

Our third album should be the most elaborate to date, with songs in Hindi, Neapolitan, Greek, French and Spanish. The material is borrowed from Bollywood, Rembetika, Opera, Venezuelan, Ecuadorian and Neapolitan folklore, classic Mexican songs, Tex Mex repertoire, Cumbia, Chicha a Spanish pop gem and a rarely performed Kurt Weill french song. The amazing Parker String Quartet plays on two of the tracks.

The tracks are all mostly finished but we need roughly $6,000 for some additional recording, mixing and mastering. The album is scheduled to come out on Barbès Records The first week in March, and needs to be completed early November.
