From NYC rooftop events to audience-performed plays touring the west coast, The Wild Plan is taking its game to a national level.
The Wild Plan: unforgettable experiences from sea to shining sea.
In June 2011, Eric Powell Holm and Ben Gansky founded The Wild Plan, an independent national tour of theatre that blazed through backyards from South Dakota to Cape Cod. It was awesome. And it was thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that it was such a success.
In summer 2012, The Wild Plan will divide and conquer: from NYC rooftops to a west coast tour of progressive performances.
This year, The Wild Plan is made up of two parts:
Wild Plan East: Sunset Rooftops will be a series of eight wildly different rooftop parties all around New York City; each Thursday from July 26th to September 13, a rooftop party will feature three different performances by a wide variety of New York City-based, genre-defying story, music, and movement artists, including new collaborations with students from around the world studying at Columbia School Of The Arts, NYU's Department of Design for Stage and Film, and the Yale School of Drama.
Wild Plan West is being created in collaboration with Minneapolis-based performance collective Myndwyrm. For the last year, Myndwyrm has been exploring performance tactics that have lead them to the form of autotheatre--in which the audience performs the piece for themselves, prompted by instructions delivered (usually) via headphones. The Wild Plan West tour will take us to residencies in arts spaces in Seattle, Portland, Napa, and the Bay Area in September.
Why, you crazy kids, why?!
Because we believe that in our increasingly disconnected culture, people need performance.
Because performance is about community--emphasizing the communities that we already live in, and creating new communities around shared experiences of art.
Because boredom is the enemy.
Because creating new and alternative structures for developing and sharing performances creates new kinds of opportunities for artists and audiences to explore what performance can mean.
Let's get specific.
Wild Plan East events will go down every Thursday evening from July 26th through September 13th.
Each week will be a different program of three different performances; because of the nature of our rooftop sites, audience size will be extremely limited. Our Kickstarter backers get first shot at reserving their spots.
We have an amazing team of artists and producers on board, with more partnerships in the works. We can't wait to share all of this incredibly exciting work with you.
Details on who, where, and what will be forthcoming.
Wild Plan West goes like this: while in residence at our partner arts spaces, we'll offer a menu of autotheatre pieces to participants, who can sign up to do a particular piece either on site or online. Some of our autotheatre pieces will take participants out into public space, exploring urban environments; some will take place entirely within gallery walls; some involve food; some involve music.
We do our best to confuse art and life. Often there is no 'story' being told--instead, the pieces function as guided experiences that hold the potential to inspire new ways of being in the world.
Wild Plan West tour dates:
- Minneapolis: August 13-20th
- Seattle: September 1-4th
- Portland: September 5-14th
- Napa: September 18-19th
- Bay Area: September 20-24th
All Wild Plan events are free, and always will be, because we believe that eliminating the barrier of cost is an important step to making this kind of work accessible to more people.
We also believe that artists do important work, and that their labor deserves to be paid.
Engineering a way for these two beliefs to flourish simultaneously is the task we set ourselves with The Wild Plan. One of the key components of our strategy is Kickstarter. Your support is what enables us to produce projects on this ambitious level.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, and don't stop believing.
