Actors Theatre is producing Dead Man's Cell Phone by Sarah Ruhl--a surreal meditation on life, death, love, and cell phones.

Actors Theatre of Phoenix has been presenting extraordinary performances in the Phoenix Valley for over 25 years. Our mission is to create contemporary professional theatre that amplifies the cultural conversation of our communities with powerful and innovative programming.

Last year's production of IN THE NEXT ROOM (OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY) by Sarah Ruhl was a smash success with audiences, and we're very excited to follow up that production with another play by Sarah Ruhl: DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE

Directed by Actors Theatre's Producing Artistic Director Matthew Wiener, DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE is a playful examination of life and death, of analog and digital, of cell phones and the afterlife.

DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE contains Ruhl's trademark whimsy and flights of fancy, including this moment:

A cell phone ballet.
Beautiful music.
People moving through the rain
with umbrellas, talking into their cell phones,
fragments of lost conversations float up.

Pretty neat, huh? We sure think so. The 'cell phone ballet' is one of a series of moments of fantasy in DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE that we can make extraordinary--with your help

By backing our Kickstarter, you're helping us to fill DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE with bits of beauty--with fancy umbrellas, clouds made of paper, bowler hats, floating chairs. Thousands of audience members will get to experience Ruhl's particular brand of theatrical magic as directed by our own Matthew Wiener --and those who back our Kickstarter will get to go home with some of the toys.

Sarah Ruhl is one of America's foremost playwrights working today. She is the recipient of a MacArthur "Genius Grant" and has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama several times. Her plays include Eurydice, Passion Play, The Clean House, and In the next room (or The Vibrator Play).

Matthew Wiener has directed over 30 productions for Actors Theatre since 1993 including: Secret Order, Shipwrecked!, Doubt, a Parable, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Pillowman, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Angels in America, Hedda Gabler, The Essential Henry V, Below The Belt, and of course, A Christmas Carol. During his tenure, Actors Theatre has received numerous local awards including Outstanding Arts Organization from Business Volunteers for the Arts, and Outstanding Producing Theatre from the Arizona Theatre Alliance. Matthew has been nominated for the 2012 Governor's Arts Awards as Artist of the Year.
