Woman Made Gallery launches it's first-ever self-published art show in Summer 2011. Zines! Comics! Prints! Drawings! Mixed media! More!
Underground is a self-published art exhibition at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago featuring women, transgender, and gender non-conforming artists from all over the United States. Organized in collaboration with Chicago Underground Library and Spudnik Press, it will open July 8th and run through August 18th. The exhibition will include both a pop-up library of zines, comics, and other self-published works by over fifty artists, as well as a show of installed artworks in all media by twelve Chicago-based artists. In conjuction with the exhibition, Woman Made Gallery will host an opening reception, a reading of self-publishing writers, a zine-making workshop, a round table discussion, and maybe even some performances, all free and open to the public.
We are hoping to raise $1500 to cover the cost of shelving for the library, printed materials for promoting the exhibition, general installation costs, and stipends for our workshop presenters. Usually, the majority of our income for exhibitions comes from entry fees. Because most of the contributors in this show are under the age of 35 and working hard to finance their own art-making, we waived the entry fees for all publication submissions, and for many of the art submissions, in order to ensure the most dynamic and diverse exhibition.
