Developing a meaningful portfolio and photo book of fine art landscape photography from the desert east side of the Pacific Northwest.
New Goal! $3,500 and a Heli-Tour of Hells Canyon!
So, we made it to $2,300 with 17 days to spare. I gave some thought to what I could get done with a little more funding, and here's what I've got.
I have looked into booking a private helicopter that would take me through Hells Canyon, the deepest canyon in the US, flying over the river as it winds between the impressive canyon walls. It would indeed take a decent sized hunk of money to do this, but I could do it along with my other trips with the $3,500. I want to shoot it at the peak of the October fall color season, to get extremely vivid colors in the foliage!
I am Jamey Pyles, a landscape photographer with a passion for experience in nature. In the last 4 years, my work has grown from underexposed snapshots to works of art; the result of countless hours and days spent experiencing the wild. I aim to create works of art that capture atmosphere... the essence of the landscape... meaning. When my experiences in nature become works of art more than dots on a screen, and the feelings are portrayed into my photographs, and viewers can feel the integrity and awe of the original experience, I call it a success. More so, even, than if I can market my photographs to the public. What perhaps sets me apart from many other photographers with a similar claim is that I am young of age - still in High School - and already pursuing and living out a dream career. What if I could create a portfolio of these successful images of a place that is much less documented, and bring the beauty of the land to the public's eye?
("Veil of Light", one of my most popular pieces)
I am going to develop a meaningful portfolio of photographs from collaborative trips to eastern Oregon and some of eastern Washington, and create a 50-80 page photo book featuring over 20 full page feature pictures and some essays on my experiences.
Why Eastern Oregon?
Oregon has a rich history of exploration, native american culture, agriculture. While the west side of the state is more heavily populated, there is a vast expanse of land beyond the Cascade mountains. Many people know of this area, but much of the population overlooks its potential for beauty.
("Owyhee Canyon" in SE Oregon)
The eastern 60% of Oregon's landscape is characterized by ancient lake basins and long, towering mountain ranges; High plateaus of wheat field scoured by deep, twisted canyons; Granite peaks and deep, glacial blue lakes. The deepest canyon in the United States also lies on Oregon's eastern border. All of these things barely scratch the surface of what is to be found in the sparsely inhabited land out there. With this project, I will attempt to do its beauty justice.
In the last year, I have become drawn in by the austere landscape of the eastern deserts and mountains. I made an 8 day long venture with some friends out to the farthest corner of the state, basking in the raw experience of it all (view photos from that trip and my other previous experiences here). I realized there was something special about the nature of this landscape to me, and the day I got back I began dreaming of a return trip. There is so much more out there to explore. Recently I came across this website, and the dream of really capturing the landscape out there became closer to a reality. The nature of what I do is that it takes the cooperation of my schedule, the weather, and current conditions. This all adds up to a time consuming project. But the real limiting factor for me is the money to get it going.

How it will work
Landscape photography is one of the most difficult jobs to make any money from, and naturally, business is coming in really slow right now. This kickstarter is not about supporting my business though, it is about getting a project off the ground that has been on the back burner of my mind for the last year. I have the time to do it at hand. I just don't have the extra funds to put into my travels.
In order to make this portfolio and photo book, I need to get my butt back out there, again and again. I need to cover more ground, do my research, write essays and plan how the book will all go together. Each location in eastern Oregon is more than 3 hours drive one way from my house in the city. In fact, some of these places are 9 hours down that lonesome highway. To be efficient, I will spend many days out there at a time, and combine multiple locations into each trip. I aim to spend about 20-30 days over the course of this year out photographing specifically in eastern Oregon and parts of eastern Washington. I will be done shooting for this first edition of the book and for this specific project in December 2012, at which time most of you awesome backers will get the rewards. The book will be available by January of 2013 and shipped to those of you who order it.
Out There, the tentative title of the photo book, will be a landscape 8.5x11 inch work, printed full color, with some black and white, on high quality silk photo paper. It will feature essays written by myself and possibly a few short poems by various authors. The layout of the complete collection of desert photos will be graphic-designed by me, and will include at least 20 full page feature photos.

Where the funds will go
The money of my $2,300 goal will be going to a few different things. Let me break it down for you.
Travel expenses are the most costly thing on my list. Gas, in particular will take up a good portion of the funds. Thankfully, I travel light and most nights will be spent out under the stars in a tent and sometimes even out on a tarp with only my sleeping bag. I've budgeted $1,000 in travel expenses.
Gear and equipment is another factor. I need a few new items for the camp; a lightweight tent, a few tarps, outdoor clothing, water containment devices, etc. I will also be purchasing some large format film camera equipment. Then there is the film for my cameras. $600 of the budget is going towards my equipment and gear.
The last thing that needs funds is the rewards for all of you awesome people who took the time to read this and sponsor my project. The remaining $700 will go to this.
All of that said, these are the very basics. If I don't get 100% of the funds I ask for, the project is not funded. However, anything extra can really help out the project. More money = more gas to get to more places, better equipment, more rewards for the backers, and most importantly a better developed portfolio of work. If I get enough extra, I will pursue publishing the book and getting it into stores. It will be a whole different adventure. None of this is a guarentee for that reason.
"The Promise Land" 1200 square miles, 6 months to capture it all
What cameras will you be shooting with? My main camera body is the Canon 40d, but I will also be working with 35mm film and 4x5 film.
What is on your list to see? Areas that I'll be going to include: Palouse, Deschutes Basin, John Day Fossil Beds, Wallowa mts/ Eagle Cap Wilderness, Elkhorn Range, Fort Rock, Steens mountain, Owyhee mountains, Warner Valley, and the list goes on and on!
When will this be done, and when will I get my rewards? The project will finish in November 2012. At that point I'll begin compiling the works. Each reward shows it's "estimated delivery" - Most of which are in December or January.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
