Creating full-color 3D holograms that you can actually afford.
Where are the personal holograms?! Do you have a personal hologram? I mean holograms are everywhere, right?
But they are not accessible.
But it seems unless you’re a major credit card company… or Michael Jordan… or a swimmer with a flair for underwater eyewear… you can’t get a hologram for yourself.
The alternatives out there don’t fit.
Yes, there are some really cool hologram kits out there that let you make your own experimental holograms, but I want something that combines the full-color higher qualities of 3D commercial holograms with digital input and even animation. At a price that can be afforded by families, put to work by small businesses, and even used as creative concepts in art projects.
The answer is Litigram!
It's a new technology I developed for making full-color 3D digital holograms in a way that’s much more efficient and cost effective.
We produced a completely new hologram printer with this design, and the first Litgrams we produced look really amazing. These Litigram holograms can be created from a variety of digital sources, or captured with a digital video recorder or camera. They are full-color 3D with sharp, clear images, that can even play out several seconds of smooth motion as you look from side to side.
Capturing a 3D scene for your Litigram is easy!
There are many, many different ways to capture the 3D images needed for your Litigram, but some of the easiest simply use your standard digital camera in video mode (or a camcorder). Below are some videos showing the before and after images captured for Litigram holograms.
For quick and easy portraits, use the "3D sweep shot." For more detail on the how to capture the "3D sweep shot," see the FAQ below. Here is a video showing the raw captured video from a digital camera and the final results.
For larger scenes involving a group shot, a slightly different 3D capture method is the "3D walking shot." For more detail on the how to capture the "3D walking shot," see the FAQ below. Here is a video showing the raw captured video from a digital camera and the final results.
And for even larger scenes, the "3D walking shot" can capture almost anything for your Litigram hologram.
It's easy and fun to capture whatever YOU want in your Litigram.
We turn your 3D scene into a full-color hologram with motion!
After you send us your 3D scene, we'll send you back a final "virtual proof" showing what will be in your Litigram hologram. After you approve the proof, we turn it into a full-color hologram that plays out the motion as you move around the image. The video above shows the Litigram with the framing and lighting options.
Why we need Kickstarter.
We’ve built the first Litigram printer, but now we need your help to go into full production.
In order to do this we need a bigger laser to power the existing Litigram hologram printer system. A bigger laser means faster exposures, and faster exposures mean more affordable holograms. We will also be making the automation system more robust for higher quality control in production, and purchasing the special hologram film we use in volume quantities so that we can get volume pricing.
Holographic laser systems and the other equipment and supplies that are necessary for this are not cheap, and venture capitalists and other traditional funding sources tend to shy away from hardware intensive hologram companies. But with the Litigram project, we can make this happen.
Litigrams... and maybe more.
Just like photography changed with the introduction of a camera that let you take the pictures and enjoy the pictures without ever actually having to develop a picture, the Litigram system will let you spend your time capturing 3D hologram images and enjoying 3D holograms without having to become a mad scientist in your spare time.
With your support, we plan to have Litigram holograms ready for limited early delivery in June, and full production for delivery in July. Help us make the hologram future happen now. And don't forget to share the new hologram happenings with your friends.
The best way to capture the images for your custom Litigram hologram depends on what you are trying to capture, but you DO NOT need a special 3D camera. Any digital camera that captures videos, or any camcorder, can capture what you need to make great 3D holograms for your Litigram. Several different ways of capturing the images are listed below.
Capturing a 3D portrait of one or two people for your custom Litigram hologram is really easy and will make a great Litigram. One of the easiest methods is the "3D sweep shot," explained below:
1) Using your digital camera in video mode (or a camcorder), hold the camera straight out in front of you with your arms fully extended toward your portrait subject.
2) Frame up your subject the way you like, leaving a little extra room around their head and shoulders in the viewfinder (you should have your camera positioned for a horizontal image, also called landscape).
3) Now keeping your arms fully extended, move the camera in a sweeping arc motion to the left until your subject is just off the screen. Then start your camera's video recording and gently sweep your arms (still fully extended) in an arc to the right, passing your subject until they are off the screen to the other side (the full sweep should take about 3-7 seconds). Stop recording.
That's it! By keeping your arms extended during the sweeping motion, you are positioning the camera to capture a wider left to right separation of images in the video, giving the necessary perspective images to create your 3D hologram. Oh, and any motion captured during the video (your subject smiling, or blowing a kiss) will be captured too. Send this video to us (we'll send all backers a reward survey at the completion of the project with details), and we'll send you back a final video proof before printing your custom Litigram hologram.

What is the best way to capture a larger 3D scene like my whole family, or a Lamborghini, or a national monument for my custom Litigram hologram?
To capture larger 3D scenes of more than 1 or 2 people (like your kid's birthday party gathering, or sights on your vacation), try using the "3D walking shot," explained below:
1) Using your digital camera in video mode (or a camcorder), stand directly in front of the subject you wish to capture and frame up the image appropriately in the viewfinder. Make sure you have a little extra room all around the subject for a safe shot (you should have your camera positioned for a horizontal image, also called landscape).
2) Now imagine that the camera is on a straight rail, extending to the left and right of the camera. Keeping your camera on this straight line path, walk to the left in a straight line past your subject until the entire subject is off the screen, or a little further.
3) Recenter your camera image on your subject from this position. Then start your camera's video recording and walk back past your subject in a straight line. Keep your subject centered on the camera screen the whole time you are walking (this takes some concentration, and don't worry about the bumps and wiggles while you walk, since we have software for correcting that), and walk in a straight line until you are an equal distance past it on the other side. Stop recording.
That's it! Your video will have the subject you captured centered on the screen for the entire video, capturing images from all of the different perspectives necessary for creating your 3D hologram. Oh, and any motion captured during the video (like tourists walking around, or birds flying off) will be captured in your hologram too. Send this video to us (we'll send all backers a reward survey at the completion of the project with details), and we'll send you back a final video proof before printing your custom Litigram hologram.
