We did it! Mostly.....

Update #7 · Sep 12, 2011 · 4 comments

Thanks to your help and support, Rigged to Flip made it to the playa, and I toured it around a fair bit. Sadly, the suspension wasn't really beefy enough to handle a bunch of people, so we were kind of limited as to loading it up as the floating party I had hoped for. I would also recommend against using a clutch system on the playa, at least in the city. Kind of a hassle, part of the charm, and thank you for your support. I gave a lot fewer rides than I wanted, including most of you, and gave out fewer beers because of it.

Let  me know where I can send you a photo! I'm still looking for a really good shot of the raft, and am hoping that a great one will surface as people decompress and get their pics up. All in all, a great experience, a mostly successful attempt, some kinks to work out, and a fun year all around.

Packing it up!

Update #6 · Aug 18, 2011 · comment

Pack it up pack it in let it begin.....

Loading Rigged and heading for the playa! I tested the lighting, which includes el wire as well as led flashers, and they're bright! Steering appears to be working correctly, and I'm confident in the motor. Now, if only those pesky control wires would show up.....

Triumph?

Update #5 · Aug 11, 2011 · comment

Thanks so much to the generous people who have helped get this thing to the playa. I leave in about 10 days, and I think I triumphed over the steering issues that have plagued the car. I think.

Lest you think I've been slacking, I ordered custom cables for the new ATV, to make sure that the controls would reach all the way into the raft. In addition to welding up a whole new, go-cart based steering system, I've been busy. Oh, and I decided to weld up the frame, rather than rely on bolting it. Less wiggle, yes? Why did I decide to do this on my own again? A singular vision always lacks from the input of others.

This weekend, 7 days before I depart for the playa, I'll be putting the whole thing together for the last time. If I have control cables, we'll do a full test ride, otherwise, I'll have to figure it out, and trust. It'll run on the playa, but I wonder how well and for how long. We'll see, we'll see!

Disaster, and Recovery

Update #4 · Jul 26, 2011 · comment

Took the rig out to 4th of Juplaya, with the hope being that I could start it up and run it around a little bit. FAIL! The atv was blowing smoke and oil, no way that thing was going to work on the playa. Meh! Platform worked, frame worked, steering mostly worked, but drivetrain sucked. Meh!

I bought a new atv to replace the old one, and this one runs like a champ. Instead of $250 to $300 in mechanical work, we're at $550 in new atv. Did I say Meh? Going to part out the old one, and some stuff from the new one, try and recover the cash, but bottom line is, Rigged is going to make it!

I rebuilt the frame, then made the wooden platform to support the raft. Ran the cables for clutch, gas, and kill button up, so I can pull them into the raft. Sweet!

Update #3 · Jun 10, 2011 · comment

plus, located the mechanic.Removed the headset and front fork, and supported it with a bar. The whole thing sits a bit low, so I'm working on that, but it can be dismantled and loaded into my truck. loctite and lock washers, big bolts, it's looking good.

I think that a nice 8x10 photo of this creature in it's native habitat would be cool, yes? For donations of $10 or more, I'll send you a signed photo of Rigged to Flip on the playa at Burning Man. And if you're coming to Burning Man 2011 and you find us, you can jump in and have a cold beer. How's that for good stuff?
