....that will be installed at the Kent County Courthouse in Grand Rapids, Michigan during Artprize 2010.
The funding I am requesting for this project will directly cover the costs of transporting the piece 450+ miles to the exhibit site, building the inner structure (which will secure the piece to the outdoor site), and installation costs. Every dollar donated will make a difference, be appreciated, and help make my dream come true!
Through this artwork, I am exploring the distinctions, ironies, and parallels between the traditional world of the quilter-homesteader (including feminism and housework) and that of the graffiti artist as poet, creator of public art, and self-expressed modern memorialists of urban landscapes, including the ideas of home, homelessness, comfort, and beauty. I am interested in questioning the distinctions raised by the terms, "stay-at-home parenting" and "women's work". The construction of the piece will happen in Marquette, Michigan while the installation of the piece will be in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Graffiti is a place where women can feel free and safe to write. It has been described by enthusiasts as “a form of communication that is both personal and free of everyday social restraints.” Meanwhile, the art of women has often been expressed in the home, with handicrafts such as quilting, embroidery, and weaving as the vehicle. Graffiti artist Mick La Rock said "I think graffiti has become a folk art, like quilting or aboriginal art."
