Greening the Ghetto will be a program designed to empower underprivileged youth to grow food for their communities.
Project Abundant Life offers Capoeira Angola, Dance, Discipline and Life Projects that combine innovative social change with beautiful and historic art forms. Our projects provide an innovative approach to long-standing inner-city problems while teaching the values of good for goodness sake. It is our vision that underprivileged youth in East Austin, will be given the opportunity to learn the knowledge needed in order to live in peace with nature and each other.
The pictures above are of the Orun Center of Cultural Arts, the location of the Greening the Ghetto garden. The center offers Capoeira Angola classes, hosts a variety of events, and generally generates a spiritual consciousness in the community. When the Orun Center started almost two years ago, the back yard was an asphalt parking lot. With lots of hard work all the asphalt is gone and we are doing what we can with our few funds to turn our yard into a garden!
Our mission is to build a community garden at the Orun Center and start an after-school program in which youth will learn, by hand, the values of growing organic health food in their own neighborhood. They will be turning compost, planting seeds, taking care of the garden, and then delivering the food to elders in the community. This way, youth can be empowered by learning through action that there is another way to live. As well as building a garden, we are planning on buying a bus. This will be a giant step in establishing our youth travel program. This project will allow youth to experience different cultures outside their immediate community safely under adult supervision. This will also allow youth to take advantage of nature and science programs in other cities. For this program, we will bring children who have little or no means of transportation to farms and community centers like the Orun Center outside of Austin. This way, they can make connections with others who are organizing for sustainability for all.In order to move on with the project, we need to purchase materials for garden beds, a rain-catching system, fencing, etc. On top of this, we will need to pay for a gas tank for a pick up truck that we need to haul supplies as well as the bus. So far, our fundraising efforts have been directed towards paying rent and bills. That said, we have been unable to raise the extra funds necessary for Greening the Ghetto. With your help, our dream can turn to reality.
