About this project
"North Korea - The Worst Human Rights Crisis in the World Today."
- Human Rights Watch
A group of animators and human right activists from Japan have determined to produce an animation film to inform, inspire, and empower others to raise a voice against heinous human rights violation inside North Korea's notorious concentration camps, where over 200,000 "violators" are overworked, tortured, raped or publicly executed today.
Using the popular and accessible so-called "Anime" style, the film will graphically depict the survival of a young boy who grew up in the camp and escaped to a freer world.
So far the filmmakers have put their own seed money for research, script writing, and storyboard creation. As the next step, they are planning to create a 110-second trailer with the funds raised hopefully through kickstarter, and the trailer will then be presented to potential investors and institutions for further fund raising to produce the entire film.
Besides serving as a pilot/trailer for the feature film, the trailer is designed to be used as an awareness video for ongoing human rights abuse in North Korea. The trailer will be broadcast across various symposiums and on the Web to promote this awareness.
The storyboard and pacing will be completed by seasoned Japanese artists, and then the actual production will be held in an animation studio in Pune, India, where skilled yet less costly talent is available.
- Synapses of NORTH
In the repatriation program in the 60's, more than 93,000 Japanese Koreans left Japan to head to North Korea, which was promised by North Korea leaders to be "Heaven on Earth." The main character's family was one of the families who took the voyage to this "Heaven on Earth", to dedicate their lives and wealth for the construction of what was meant to be the greatest nation, and that would promote communist idealism.
Relatively peaceful days in Pyongyang enjoyed by the family abruptly ended with the disappearance of the grandfather, and the main character's forced transfer to Yudok concentration camp. Suffering through years of forced labor, violence, and the loss of loved ones, the main character grows to become a man from inside the concentration camp....
