About this project

Excalibur Comics / Women of Wonder Documentary.

So, for the last couple years I've created free documentaries for Excalibur Comics and Wonder Woman Day. Wonder Woman Day, now called Women of Wonder Day, works like this: every year, original images of Wonder Woman and other female superheroes are auctioned off, and proceeds go to domestic violence charities. And since I can't draw a stick figure, my contribution to the event is to create shorts to cover the events. So far, my five docs - covering the Excalibur Comics, Portland, Oregon location exclusively - have been watched by 15,000 people. And over the last five years, the event itself has raised over $110,000 for domestic violence shelters. Pretty cool!

Video AND Film? Awesome!

So, here we are in 2011. This year, I'd like to take a different approach to the project, and that's why I'm asking for help. We're already filming interviews in HD video like usual, but for the event itself, I'd like to shoot the event on glorious film as well as video. Well, not exactly: the incredible independent filmmaker Cathleen Arnerich is going to be the director of photography and SHE'S going to shoot the event on film. Then, to keep the spirit of artistry and hands-on creation alive, we are going to self-process the stock! From there, we'll telecine it and it will become the bulk of the film!

Follow The Money!

So, Cathleen is donating free time, equipment and expertise to the project. And once again, I'm directing, editing and producing for free. And my wife, Shannon, will once again let me disappear into my office over winter break to make another awesome short doc. But film itself is expensive, and the more film we can buy, the better the Excalibur Comics / Women of Wonder 2011 Documentary will be! SO, I'm asking for help with the cost of the film stock. The more money we raise, the more stock we can buy. The more stock we can buy, the more we can cover. And the more we can cover, the better the film will be, the more people will watch it, the more attention the event will get and on and on! So, if you'd like to help, we're ready for you!

Big Money / Big Prizes!

You want credit? You want the film - and ALL the other films - on DVD or Blu ray? You want one-of-a-kind pieces of incredible original art by the coolest indie artists around? Well, my friends, you've come to the right place!

Putting My Money Where My Mouth Is.

Here's every single short that's been produced so far, including the 2009 doc, also featured above. This is what I'm doing and why, and hopefully says it all. Thank you for watching...and for your help!

FAQ

  • Great question, internet! It's pretty simple, actually...we'll buy more film! Kickstarter suggests that your goal be the absolute minimum to accomplish your project goals. However, we'd LOVE to have two to three times as much film to shoot at the event. With more film stock comes more processing costs, more tape stock, more equipment costs. So, it all stacks up. I can tell you that your donation will go toward making a better film, no matter how much we receive, period! THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
