Photo-main

A collection of writing and artwork inspired by the ecosystems we depend on. Leaf Litter will be distributed through an upcoming Signal Fire art show.

As part of Signal Fire's show in November highlighting the artists who participated in our wilderness residency, we will also be releasing the first issue of Leaf Litter. This will be a continuing project within Signal Fire to expose and promote writers, poets and artists who are inspired by the human relationship with wild places.

The first issue will include essays, fiction, natural drawings and a poster for nonstop enjoyment. It will be printed locally in Portland, OR on recycled paper and distributed free throughout the area. We will also be going on a tour of US colleges and artist groups in the spring and continuing to distribute the publication. The funds raised would pay for the cost of printing.

Signal Fire provides opportunities for artists to engage with the natural world in a way that will inspire and inform their work. Formed in 2008 in response to the urban demand on working artists, we bring artists to the farthest stretches of our remaining wild and open places. Utilizing Oregon's vast area of public lands, we advocate for the importance of access to and protection of these places in order to enrich and sustain society. We maintain a commitment to keep our programming low-cost or free and accessible to artists working in all media.

This past summer we continued our Outpost residency in the Mt. Hood National Forest after purchasing large wall tents (pictured above) and considering over fifty applicants. We were able to accommodate eight artists from a range of disciplines and different areas of the US. For more information about applying to next year's residency or attending one of our backpacking trips and artists retreats, please visit www.signalfirearts.org.
