A young food critic in a small town with no food options meets a hotheaded NYC master chef and the two form an unlikely friendship.

“Acquired Taste” is the story of Nicholas Kessler, a fifteen year old aspiring food critic who lives in Sudbury, a very small town with no food options. One day, Nicholas unexpectedly meets Jameson Gellar, a brash and abrasive New York City master chef who has arrived in Sudbury. Gellar has fled NYC after his latest tasting menu was torn apart by critics. Having taken over a restaurant space to prepare a new menu in peace, Gellar is forced to deal with Nicholas and his constant requests for an interview. Despite his best efforts to shun Nicholas, Gellar finds his defenses being worn down and a very unlikely friendship developing between them.

I grew up in a town of 3,500 people with no traffic lights or cell service. From a culinary perspective, I endured a rather literal feast or famine situation. I had The Mayflower Inn, the fanciest hotel/restaurant in Connecticut in my town alongside the Washington Pizza Parlor, an establishment few would mistake for fine dining. Having had the good fortune to travel at a young age, I was keenly aware of the culinary world that lay outside the boundaries of my town. These experiences, particularly juxtaposed with the day-to-day reality of rural Connecticut dining, kept food ever at the forefront of my mind.
In addition to my love of food, I was fascinated by movies from a very young age. When I was ten years old, I wrote and published a movie review magazine that I sold and distributed around my county. Not many people read it, but a couple of people did. One of these people was a figure from the outside world who went on to become very influential in my life. In fact, my decision to pursue a career in film was in large part due to this relationship. Although Nicholas Kessler is very different from me, I related tremendously to his experiences.
The journey of “Acquired Taste” has been the most challenging and rewarding of my life. I began writing this film over two years ago with my friend and colleague, Nicolas Charles, and now have an assembled film of which I am enormously proud.
I had the great fortune to shoot “Acquired Taste” in my hometown of Washington, Connecticut and the surrounding area. Having grown up there, I was able to draw on resources within the local community and gain access to some spectacular locations for little to no cost. I was overwhelmed by the generosity, assistance, and support provided by the people of my town.
We cast the film out of New York City and were incredibly fortunate to find two extremely gifted actors, Luke Rosen and Richard Mover, who were able to bring Nick and Gellar to life. I also managed to assemble a crew of very talented people, all of whom have believed in this project from the start.
“Acquired Taste” was a long, demanding shoot with some very complicated sequences shot under very challenging circumstances (the extreme humidity of a Connecticut June being the least of them). The dedication of my cast and crew impressed me every step of the way. The film, including reshoots, was shot over several periods on both the East and West Coasts.
Each time I watch the final cut I am thrilled, knowing how the film is going to look once my post-production team can finish their work. Now it's just a matter of money that stands in the way of this happening. I hope you will consider being a part of what I know will be a very special film when it's finally completed.
