Help fund a new hybrid art form in which video and light projections bring paintings to life!
My name is Miles Toland and I am inspired to take existing ideas and rework them into fresh and exciting new forms. Lately I have been projecting video animations and controlled lighting onto my paintings in order to bring my inanimate brushstrokes to life. My most recent piece, The Alchemist, is a large oil painting of an aquatic spirit blowing bubbles that manifest into jellyfish. I have created a video animation of this imagery and projected it onto the painting so that the painted figure and the virtual figure create a dance that trick the eye. The static painting becomes an ephemeral experience that takes on a unique life of its own. I have launched this Kickstarter project in order to fundraise money for a high-powered projector. My short term plan is to get The Alchemist out of my college studio and into the Seattle Aquarium where the idea was inspired or into a local museum or gallery. I would like to share this exciting and innovative work with the world!
My up and coming project involves painting three portraits of women under intense colored lighting that will alter the way I perceive my color palette. The first portrait will be painted under red light and capture a raw and passionate energy that is sexual and animalistic. The second portrait will be painted under green light and capture the sickly feeling of envy or greed. And the third portrait will be painted under blue light and capture the vast feeling of infinity that comes with spiritual awakening. The portraits will make sense underneath the light in which they were created, but will appear unconventional and off-putting under normal lighting conditions. I have also launched this Kickstarter project to fundraise money for three 20-inch LED light bars that I will be painting under and ultimately use for the final presentation. With your help, I plan to push the boundaries of painting and create new hybrid art forms. The colors that we perceive with our eyes do not accurately describe what is objectively in front of us. I want to bring awareness to our malleable perception through these exploratory projects.
