The main premise is juxtaposition. The sporty style lines of a technical wetsuit are mapped into the elegant silhouettes of the 1950’s.
When working on a project that includes others you have to find one common thread that every participant can base the work upon. I am working on a collection that will be part of a show that includes 4 other designers. Since we were all inspired by completely different things we decided to build the collections around the idea that one can still be very chic, in fashion, even avant garde, while taking a step towards sustainability. It's the idea that if everyone included being more environmentally conscious into their lives then we will make a difference. This isn't an eco or sustainable collection, in it's entirety, but more of an example of how sustainable practices can be mixed into our every day lives.
This women's wear collection, entitled 'Black Tie Optional,' is about juxtaposition. It is based on the introduction of a forward-thinking scuba diver to the Golden Age of Couture ( more-or-less initiated by Christian Dior at the beginning of his career) into a world without inhibitions. The sporty style lines of a technical wetsuit are mapped into modern renditions of the elegant silhouette's of the late 40's & early 50's, with pops of neon and eclectic details.
The garment's for "Black Tie Optional' are being created with unusual mixes of textiles; such as neoprene and an eco/sustainable, silk organza that is made from milk protein fibers. All of the textiles/fabrics have been sourced locally, from Italian companies, many of which are family run and have been around for years. In addition, this 'eco' undertone has been made possible by a collaboration I am doing with Citta Dell'Arte (http://www.cittadellarte.it/). Citta dell'arte- Fondazione Pistello is a non-profit organization located in Biella, Italy, who's objective is social utility, focusing on Art, Education, Ecology, Economy, Politics, Spirituality, Production, Work, Communication, Architecture, Fashion and Nourishment.
This is my first collection and my thesis project for the Fashion Institute of Technology at Politecnico di Milano. My goal is to complete 7 hand sewn, made in Italy, looks; consisting of a skirt, bathing suit, a few dresses, pants, a blouse, a jacket and a few accessories. All of these looks are derivative of my portfolio that I completed last semester. (see the photos!) Naturally some things have changed and progressed as the creating process has begun. The garments and ideas are now more geared towards being shown on a runway; an exaggeration of the norm!!
Although I have been fortunate enough to receive sponsorship and some of the fabrics have been donated to me, there are many other costs involved. I am asking for your support for the costs of fabric for 'mock up' garments (we often make 3 or 4 versions of one dress to get the fit right before it is cut in the actual fabric), fabrics that weren't provided by sponsorship, patterning and sewing supplies, printing, and shoes.
Any donation is so greatly appreciated! The way kickstarter works is if we don't meet the goal donation in time then the project isn't funded. So fingers crossed and good luck!
Lastly, grazie mille a tutti (thanks a million everyone) for your time, interest, and support. I promise to commit to this project 100% and give you a show you won't forget! :)
