About this project
I have an amazing invitation to bring my installation 'Network' to an artist-run international conference, being held this October in Sao Paolo Brazil. Upgrade! Soft Borders is entirely run by a network of new media artist groups around the world. As such, it's a great context for exchange and exposure, but funding is limited, especially this year. Many artists participate via fundng from institutions where they teach. My chosen 'gig' is not in academia but in technology development for artists. So, in order to participate, I will need to raise my plane fare, materials costs, and accommodations.
'Soft Borders' will be my second international invitation, so it's also a huge opportunity for my work. Your help to get me there would be greatly appreciated!
More about 'Network':
Visualizing the idea that we simultaneously live in a real and virtual world, and that the virtual is infinitely expansive, 'Network' uses large quantities of electric yellow twine (tied in patterns based on both social network structures and Internet network infrastructure) to suggest a virtual network landscape cutting through an otherwise ordinary space.
Since November 2009, site-specific versions of 'Network' have been created in Chicago for an unused store front downtown and a gallery space at Hyde Park Art Center (for Spatial City, An Architecture of Idealism, which will also travel to MOCAD Detroit in September). Currently, a version for 'What It Is' project space in Oak Park IL takes over a working house.
