A comedy-drama about the struggle against aging, isolation, and priggishness.

We, Anita Noble and Eve Sigall, are members of Waltz Productions and are seeking funding for the presentation of The West Side Waltz, byErnest Thompson, who also wrote On Golden Pond. West Side Waltz has not been seen in Los Angeles since its premiere at the Ahmanson in 1980, starring Katharine Hepburn. It went from there to Broadway in 1981 and was later made into a motion picture including Shirley Maclaine, Liza Minnelli, and Kathy Bates. Waltz Productions has gathered a seasoned Broadway and Hollywood professional cast and crew. We intend to present five matinée performances and one evening performance of the West Side Waltz at the Whitmore-Lindley Theatre in the Noho Arts District of the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles.

What is this play about?  Well, Anita plays Cara, the ravaging bon-bon–eating neighbor of the senior citizen Margaret Mary, played by Eve, a two-time Ovation nominee.  Margaret Mary is the aging senior who wants to be a maverick, an independent woman as so many seniors do! She refuses to give in to her failing body but fights to prove that she can continue to learn and is open to new experiences, interests, and relationships.

Cara wishes to look after Margaret Mary, but her overtures of friendship are rejected. Margaret Mary chooses instead to gain companionship by asking a much younger woman, Robin (Tina Gasbarra), to live with her. Soon Robin’s new boyfriend,Glen (John Haegele), and Serge (Jack Kandel), the handyman, add to the entanglements of relationships and the comic complications that take place!

We are so fortunate to have Broadway director Marc Mantell at the helm lending his creativity and insight.

Seniors will find the play particularly delightful, and, since the Valley is filled with centers and homes for retirees, we hope to attract them and provide a wonderful theatrical experience to which they can relate.

We need your help to make this play a reality. We must pay royalties, provide a set, lighting and sound, and obtain the technical help without which we cannot do the show. We need money. Won’t you help us?
