About this project

While filming in El Salvador for his new feature-length documentary film "Return to El Salvador," Philadelphia-based director Jamie Moffett came across the story of the disappearance and murder of community leader, anti-mining and environmental activist Marcelo Rivera. Rivera's body was discovered in the bottom of a well with evidence of torture that indicates a death squad killing.

Rivera's murder coincides with Canadian mining company Pacific Rim's class action lawsuit against the government of El Salvador for opposing plans to establish a gold mine near the impoverished town of San Isidro. The proposed mine would contaminate San Isidro's already limited water supply, and social and environmental activists who have raised this concern have been the victims of violence and death threats.

In response to the injustice of Rivera's murder, Jamie produced this seven-minute short film to raise awareness of the increasingly violent situation. While the film was made without thought for profit, we look to you to help cover a small portion of the production costs.

If Marcelo Rivera's story has spoken to you and you'd like to contribute, please consider putting money in the proverbial hat to help support its production!
