The Project

Binky the Manbaby is a character I created in 2009 and have been molding since. I’ve been developing a series around the character for the past year or so, and am now ready to get this project off the ground. The animation is still rough and the concept is in its development stages, but with funding, I can give this project the full attention it needs.

What you will be funding is two 3-5 minute episodes, produced on a 3-month schedule, to be posted on YouTube and circulated throughout the internet to build a fan base and to act as a stepping stone for pitching to networks, media  outlets, and any other possible investors.

The Content

Binky is exactly what the title suggests …a manbaby. He’s in his mid-30’s, single and works as a customer service rep for an insurance company. Though he is man-sized, along with man-sized responsibilities, he is unable to age or mature as normal people do, trapped in a perpetual state of infancy. Is it a medical condition? A product of radioactivity? A gypsy curse? We may never know.

The show will be animated employing the classic beauty of traditional, hand-drawn techniques combined with the practicality of digital methods.

Who Am I?

My name is Josh Halford, and you can see my work here:

http://joshhalford.com and here http://joshhalford.blogspot.com

I’ve been animating and drawing cartoons my whole life. I worked in graphic design for several years, developing short cartoons and series on the side as a fun hobby. In 2008, I left my career in graphic design to pursue a Bachelor’s in animation, which I received in June of this year. I have since been freelancing as an animator and illustrator, while focusing on developing this idea into something that can possibly become fruitful. It has been my life long dream to have my own successful series, and I feel that I am now finally capable of making that happen.

Though animation and commercial art has always been my medium, my real passion will always be making people laugh. In the last year, I have released two short films, Cinnamon Onion POPS® and the award-winning Sofa Shannisford Falls In Love. See both below. I had a lot of fun putting them together and hope to continue my career as a filmmaker/animator.

Who Else Is Working On It?

The always amazing Eddie Betancourt, whose work can be seen here http://lutraphobic.tumblr.com/ and here http://www.lutraphobic.net/, is doing character designs, as well as other various artwork for the show. Eddie is motivated, knowledgable and someone I have the utmost respect for when it comes to creativity and style. I believe he will be an important asset in developing the look and personality of the show.

What’s the Money Paying For?

The money you contribute can be broken down into the following components:

  • Hiring artists and actors
  • The rewards
  • Supplementing my wages during production
  • Taxes, Kickstarter/Amazon fees

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

My biggest challenge so far has been getting the deadline and budget to meet so that the project is given a realistic amount of time to be completed. Unfortunately, animation is a slow and tedious process. I plan to overcome this by designing the characters to be animated quickly while still maintaining their visual appeal.
