Help me recover over 25 hours of footage shot of my 65 year old autistic Uncle Tommy, which will be used for a documentary on him.
My name is Nathan Mazur. When I was growing up, there really was never a dull moment. My family itself was small. It was just my parents, my younger brother, and me. But when my Dad decided to go back to school and get his masters degree, we ended up moving in with my Grandparents, and suddenly our small family became a pretty large one. The experiences in that house are most definitely part of what made me into the man I have become, and I have a lifetime of memories from living there.
I was 7 years old, and living in a house with so many people was the coolest thing for me. One of the people living there as well was my Uncle Tommy. My first memories of Uncle Tommy are really no different than my first memories of my other Aunts and Uncles. Family time, dinners, singing, and fun. Tommy was a part of all of that. I did know early on though that Tommy was different. That didn't really matter to me though. At 7 years old, all you really care about is having fun, and quite frankly, Tommy was the king of make believe, and fun!
I got to know Tommy really well from living there, and yes, Tommy was "different". Tommy was diagnosed at a young age with something called "Mental Retardation", which in this day and age would almost certainly be "autism". When you meet him, talk to him, and see how his brain works, it aligns almost perfectly with that diagnosis. But of course, back then, they didn't know as much as they do now about autism, and other mental impairments.
The stories that I have been told about Tommy from my Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, etc go back years and years. He used to walk everywhere, and once walked across the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit/Windsor. That's one of my favorites, and it's told in the footage that I have shot thus far. The man is truly a legend, and I want to make sure that these stories, and as much video footage of Tommy himself are captured so that they are never forgotten.
My Uncle Tommy is fascinating. I've been lucky enough to see it from close up for years. Now I want to show how fascinating he is to as many others as possible. His story is one definitely worth telling.
In 2006 I started shooting video footage of my Uncle Tommy, and talking with many who know him and have stories about him. I interviewed a lot of people, went with Tommy on many outings (bowling, eating, dancing, etc), and the footage that I captured is priceless. Life then got in the way, and what I started got put on the back burner. Unfortunately during that time on the back burner, the the hard drive that stored all of the footage that I shot became corrupt and now that data is now not retrievable unless via a professional data recovery service.
My reason for starting this kick starter is to raise some funds in order to recover that footage. I also plan on starting to shoot new footage of my Uncle Tommy again. It's been 5 years since I documented anything, so I think it will be interesting to see the progression of Tommy over the last 5 years.
What has already been captured is amazing. I do promise that anyone who supports this documentary will be fascinated, and entertained by Uncle Tommy. I want to make sure to capture as much as I can, and I will start shooting new footage again in the coming weeks as my schedule allows.
If you can help with the recovery of the footage, I would greatly appreciate it. Any additional funds raised over and above our goal will go directly to support the making and completing of this documentary.
Thank you again in advance for your support. I promise in the end, you will be pleased with the final product!
