A 4-day music festival for all ages, engaging the community in the process of music making, and featuring composer Bruce Adolphe
Off the Hook: on the musical edge is a contemporary music festival to be held July 24 -28 in scenic Fort Collins, Colorado. This festival is designed to engage and educate children and adults in the process of music making and to raise community awareness of the value of music in our everyday lives. We promote this goal by creating an appreciation of varying musical genres, encouraging involvement in the music making process, and creating powerful, live performances for people of all ages.
We are thrilled to feature Bruce Adolphe as our guest composer-in-residence. In addition to composing, Bruce is the founder and director of the Meet the Music! family concert series, the resident lecturer at The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the keyboard quiz-master on public radio’s weekly Piano Puzzler on Performance Today, and the founder and creative director of The Learning Maestros. The author of three books on music, Mr. Adolphe has taught at Yale University, The Juilliard School, and New York University, and was recently appointed composer-in-residence at the Brain and Creativity Institute in Los Angeles.
Off the Hook engages audiences in participatory performance through daily children/family concerts hosted by Bruce Adolphe, evening chamber music concerts, an Improvisation workshop, and a city-wide Improvisation Station jam session. The Improvisation Station event features performance by jazz, bluegrass, country, and classical artists, encouraging our audience not only to listen but also to actively participate as music makers. Our final performance is augmented by Bruce Adolphe’s pre-concert lecture: music’s effect on the brain from research compiled at The Brain and Creativity Institute in Los Angeles. The featured piece on this program, Self Comes to Mind, utilizes video of brain scan images captured from this research.
Our goal in producing Off the Hook is to increase awareness of the power of music to connect individuals. Each exposure of the community to live music performance increases the number of people who connect music with a personal feeling of satisfaction and enjoyment. This has a rippling effect that increases concert attendance and develops music appreciation, all of which fosters support of all local non-profit arts organizations. The more prominent and publicly healthy our arts scene, the more vibrant our community.
