Opening reception and month long exhibit of metalwork, jewelry, and photography by Oakland artist Kate Ellen at The Hive Gallery.
:: The Inspiration ::
You may have heard it said that many artists and creative types produce better work when they have a constraint or limit--like if a painter can only use the color blue or a writer can only use the structure of a sonnet. Lucky me, this recession has put a fabulous constraint on my work--the soaring prices of gold and silver have forced me to look at other ways of creating. This project and installation will be the culmination of my jewelry art, photography, and visual art related to this limitation and the broader implications of our economy.
Some of the work on this project has already been completed, some is still in my sketchbook. The finished pieces so far explore concepts related to money: what is it really? I was also very influenced by the This American Life episode 423: The Invention of Money , in which they talk about money being 'fiction' and describe the bizarre solution to Brazil's inflation problem--essentially tricking the entire population into thinking their currency had value. There are just so many fascinating things happening in our economy and I have been thinking and creating around these themes.
I have also been playing around with the the periodic table and atomic mapping, microscopic views of metal, coin history, mining history of California, and our interest in things that sparkle (and how shocked we are when they aren't "worth" anything).
Here are a couple finished pieces (and see more in the video):
