I will be walking across America along the Continental Divide and taking a picture every 10 seconds to create a time lapse to remember.
Ever wanted to see America in its true form, away from all the cities and lights? Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to travel across the entire country one foot at a time?
This is your chance. I'll be walking the entire length of the United States along the Continental Divide Trail, and I'll be creating a time lapse of the trip. I'll be starting at the Mexican border and finishing 2700 miles later just over the Canadian border. I will be traveling across New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.
Now, what's so special about that you ask? Well, no one has ever done anything like this before. People have created time lapse films about hiking across America, however those time lapses were created using less then 5000 pictures. I'm proposing to create a film were I'll be shooting approximately 5000 pictures every single day; The difference being a unique and awe inspiring display of the world passing right before your eyes. A journey of over 2,700 miles with over a quarter of a terabyte of pictures.
I'll also be creating a short documentary about the trip, involving everything from prep-work, what life is like when walking across a country, and post journey.
This is where I need your help. Creating a movie like this would be difficult under normal circumstances, however I'll be carrying everything on my back and not have access to modern conveniences like power outlets or easily managed storage space. Sometimes I'll be 10 or more days away from the next place with AC power. Everything will need to work off the grid.
If this project is funded, it will allow me to purchase 2 cameras, solar chargers, extra battery, and plenty of storage space while I'm out there.
I'll start the actual hike in April 2013. The time spent up to that point will be getting all the logistical arrangements made and making sure the the cameras and all technical gear works flawlessly.
Thank you and if you would like to ask me any questions feel free to contact me.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There are several challenges to overcome, technically, physically, and mentally.
Technically there is the problem of actually shooting 5000+ pictures every single day for months at a time. There aren't many cameras out there that have the battery life of that, and still provide full HD resolution.
I'll be taking 2 Iphone 5's as my cameras. One as the time lapse camera and the other as a standard / backup camera. Each will have an extended battery/waterproof case so that they will be able to take the required amount of pictures each day. The reason I choose the Iphone instead of traditional cameras is due to their low weight and high functioning camera, yet they still have the battery life to provide 2 days of shooting power on a single charge.
For the Extra storage I'll be carrying several large capacity SD cards in a waterproof/crushproof pelican case.
For the battery I'll be carrying a personal solar panel and several large backup battery supplies so that I would still be able to run the cameras at full capacity for even my longest stretch.
The other challenges associated with the project is the actual feat of hiking across one of America's toughest trails. The trail is not entirely complete, it travels through grizzly bear territory, vasts stretches of desert and hundreds of miles in the alpine zone.
I've completed thru-hikes of both the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. As well as other long distance hikes in 3 different continents. I completed the AT in 3.5 months and was the first thru-hiker to complete the trail southbound that year. I completed the PCT in 4 months during a record-high snow year in the in the sierras.
I'm a lead instructor with North Carolina Outward Bound School, as well as a professional ski patroller that currently holds an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician certification.
I'm not asking for help to fund the hike, all pledges will go towards the equipment to create this project.
Again thank you,
How long with the DVD be once you condense the timelapse? Are you going to have a narrative to go along with it or will it be a "silent film"?
I will have a few different lengths, one will play the entire thing running at 30 fps, and divided into chapters (trail miles) and it will have music. That will be approx. 3 hours, with about 40 chapters. I want this for people to see the entire trail in detail, and to use it as a tool and rescource. There will also be a condensed version that will be about 90 minutes with music also. This will have certain areas sped up (large stretches of New Mexico desert and the plains in Wyoming and Colorado). If you pledge you will get both the full detail time lapse and the condensed version.
I will create a Documentary along with the time lapse that will show pre, during, and post hike, with selected pieces of time lapse inserted into the film. I would like to enter that film into festivals like Banff and other small independent ones.
