“The Passersby” is a short film and part of a larger project called BATESIAN, the collaborative international filmmaking experience. In this fictional world of skill transfer and trade, one New York City businesswoman has no skills to offer--and loses herself in a plot to corrupt the skill transfer corporation that simultaneously employs and demeans her.
“The Passersby”, short film script by US screenwriter Andre Rios, focuses on the crushing scrutiny we place on ourselves and one another, exacerbated by a technology and trade that makes our abilities redeemable as commercial goods. Berta, a kind and timid woman employed by Globability. a major corporation in New York City, exists in a lonely cell of an office, unable to donate skills her own company deems unsellable. No one knows her name except her insecure boyfriend, Paul, an artist dependent on Berta for affirmation, absorbing her compliments while feeding her none. When Berta reaches her breaking point, unable to tolerate her own mediocrity and invisibility, she rebels against the comopany--interfering with its technology--severs her poisonous relationship with Paul and scares off her demeaning coworkers, eventually isolating herself completely and accepting her status as the “anti-skill”.
THE “BATESIAN” PROJECT:
Batesian, the colaborative filmmaking experience, is an international transmedia project currently in a purely filmmaking phase, in which writers, directors, actors, editors...everyone involved in the creative process...cooperate for the collective goal of building a communal, fictional universe: a believable world in which skills can be extracted from human donors, packaged and sold to consumers. What are the possibilities, risks, harms and catastrophes within this Batesian world? Various projects will play with the potential within this universe.
Our international crew is going to work for free on the entire project, but we would love to pay the related production expenses (including 2 EU-CAN flights, locations, catering for the crew, local travel costs and a little budget for the promotion of the released DVD and its distribution).
We are still aiming to do high-quality film with very little resources and 100% commitment.
While our headquarters is in Vienna, Austria, the aim of the Batesian project is to involve filmmakers, actors and writers from different countries around the world. Therefore, we partnered with Jules Saulnier, organizer of Kino00 in Montreal, to produce a short in his hometown. We would love to include talent local to Montreal as well as from other parts of the world. But to do so, we must first raise funds!
Joe Berger, director: AUSTRIA
Joe is an Austrian director, DOP and studied at the Vienna's film academy. While he has lots of experience working in the Austrian and German film industry, he is always curious to try out new things. As a director, he produced music videos and image films, as well as a children's TV show.
"I'm looking forward to working together with such an international team on the set of "The Passersby". It will surely be a challenge to build up the tension and suspense in this story that only plays in one room with one character. But if it all comes together I think the film will be well worth the effort and I can't wait to get started!"

Philipp Kaindl, producer of the BATESIAN project: AUSTRIA
After having studied something completely different, Philipp co-founded kino5 and started making short films and documentaries in Vienna in 2004. Fresh ideas together with a good story and the emotions they trigger are what fascinates me in the films I watch. He also has a soft spot for the absurd and the slow – both can work wonders if the timing and the dosage are right. He loves to try out new things and to gain experience as he goes along, which is what the BATESIAN film project is all about…
