Rebecca Schiffman Jewelry - The Upper East Side Collection
Dear Friends,
I have begun designing and producing a new collection of jewelry inspired by architectural motifs found on New York's Upper East Side.
As a lifelong Upper East Sider, I have walked by the same buildings over and over again for 29 years but only recently started seeing with a greater level of detail. The first time I notice a particular carving which I have probably passed thousands of times it is like a revelation. Many designs have stuck in my mind and I envision these motifs translated boldly and elegantly into ornaments for the body.
This collection will feature jewelry pieces based on at least 20 different motifs which will be employed in whatever way best suits that design. I have already completed several pieces by the following method:
I sketch out the design based on detailed photographs I take around the neighborhood. I then carve the model for each piece out of wax. I bring these wax models to Taba Casting, an environmentally friendly caster in New York who uses only recycled metals. Using the Lost Wax casting process they create silver versions of each model. I then touch up and finish the models before having Taba create a silicon mold from which I can create multiples of the same piece.
Two years ago I completed a course in wax modeling, casting and mold making at Studio Jewelers. For the last year I have been studying with the master model maker Fred de Vos, without whose guidance this project would not be possible.
I am seeking to raise $5,000 to hit the ground running with this first collection and turn it into a profitable business.
Money will be used to do the following:
- cast new wax models in silver
- create silicon molds from models
- buy tools necessary to improve precision and speed up process of creating model
- buy necessary materials like wax and silver
- hire jewelry photographer to photograph each prototype
- finish new website with online store showcasing all of the pieces

Rebecca Schiffman is a jewelry designer and singer/songwriter in New York City. She attended the Cooper Union School of Art and while there she made chainmail jewelry for herself and her friends. After college she interned for the New York design team Proenza Schouler for a summer.
She has studied silversmithing at the 92nd Street Y, ancient jewelry techniques at Jewelry Arts Institute (NYC), has a certificate for casting and mold making from Studio Jewelers, LTD (NYC) and currently studies wax carving with master model maker Fred de Vos.
She launched her chainmail jewelry collection called IMK Jewelry in 2009. IMK was picked up by several boutiques around the United States as well as Henri Bendel.
During all this time Schiffman has also released two solo albums and has performed on guitar at clubs throughout New York City, always wearing her jewelry creations. She finally got her ears pierced for the first time in August, 2011 at so she can wear the earrings she creates.
