I will be collaborating with the Webb City Farmers Market community to create a mural in downtown Webb City.
I will be leading a community mural in conjunction with the Webb City Farmers Market in Webb City, MO. The Market is a diverse and thriving community, and an important local gathering place that provides a wealth of community-building events, and an invaluable source of locally and sustainably produced food.
Our process will include extensive involvement of the Market
Community (including vendors, farmers, and market patrons). Our goal is to
synthesize the Market Community's ideas into a final mural design that reflects
its self-identity, values, and hopes. The community mural process, as I learned
it from nationally-renowned community muralist, Dave Loewenstein (when I apprenticed
under him on the Joplin Community Art Project last summer) is a process that
involves the community in the conception, design, and execution of a mural
under the guidance of professional artists. The results are inevitably
beautiful and unique artworks that serve as sources of community pride, as the
members of the community can claim ownership of the finished work, and reflect
on the collaborative community events that led to its completion.
I will be at the Market throughout the month of May (every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday) collecting input from members of the Community: What is special about the Market? What does it mean to be a part of the Market Community? Why is this Community important to our lives? How does the Market Community impact the culture of our region?, etc. We will ask community members to describe (verbally and through drawings and paintings done at the booth) what images symbolize the values of the Market Community, and what images capture the identity of the Community. As this input is gathered, we will begin to synthesize the imagery and ideas into preliminary designs. We will also develop new surveys and booth activities for each Market day to delve deeper into these questions.
After we reach our final design, we will conduct Community Painting Days, during which anyone who wants to pitch in can come and help paint the basic design of the mural. In the following weeks, we will complete the painting.
The final painting will be a large-scale exterior mural in downtown Webb City that will celebrate the Market's tremendous contributions to the culture of our region.
Your contribution will go toward the purchase of essential supplies, like paint and brushes, and to help us hire a much-needed assistant artist.
