Gorgeous guitar-based jazz/acoustic/blues improv's now being recorded to a Best-Of CD.
Doing the impossible
On January 1 of 2012 I started the Song A Day Project. After almost 40 years as a folk, rock and blues guitarist I wanted to stretch myself with something new. And I was just coming off a decade-long project: meticulously writing, rewriting and arranging a Broadway-style musical. I needed something fresh, fast, challenging, invigorating, maybe a little terrifying. Could I create a new guitar song every day for a year? I knew the first month would be easy, but after that? 365 ideas! It sounded impossible. So I dove in.
From improvisation to CDs
Here we are half way into it and it's going so well that I want to take the best ideas from the year and record a full version of them at studio quality. Truth is, I recorded most of the songs you'll hear in the sample video right into my iphone mic! It's time to step up the game and make the recording as beautiful as the music. We'll take the best of 365 ideas and record as many as we can to fill a 76 minute CD to the brim with gorgeous, lush arrangements.
And then there's the little added bonus of bringing in guest musicians. During 40 years you meet and hang onto some great musical pals. From my Sicilian friend, Danilo, to his buddy and legend-class guitarist Phil Keaggy (who Danilo got to volunteer to play on a track) to jazz and rock guitar maven Mike Pachelli, brilliant pianists Manuel Luz and Mike Hoye, composer and arranger David G. M. Anderson, lyrical saxophonist Ray Logan, and the incomprehensible John Zulauf on drums, we have a team that will create beauty and excitement at every turn.
Samples from January 2012
Here's a quick little sampler of what I've already created, just using my iphone, laptop, several late nights mixing, and a couple wonderful guitars. And this is just month 1 of 12 we have to choose from. There are over a 100 more songs on the website already and more coming online regularly. And we have a YouTube channel with more samplers and songs to check out!
I've been playing guitar almost all my life, and I've never recorded a CD. If you think it's time, please join in and help make it happen. Thanks!
