$337,630 Am I Crazy?

In a word, No. But since the question was raised in an email I received from a backer, I figured I'd address it here...

“Why is such a large sum of money needed to launch this Kickstarter project?”

It's probably hard to believe, but $337,630 is only covering the expenses to get the ToolHANGER launched... absolutely no profit will be generated or personal investment will be recovered until I reach this goal. This large sum of money will be used to pay to create the mold (tool) for a one piece board, manufacture the board that you bought as a reward, and ship it to you. I could have cut corners but I wanted the ToolHANGER to be:

Can’t Find Your Tools

Like you, I do odd jobs around the house. I start by looking for the tools I need in the junk drawer. When I cannot find them there I go out to the garage cabinet where my tools are supposed to be and find nothing but a mess....nothing's organized, nothing's easy to locate, and nothing's labeled.It actually takes longer to find tools that it does to do the project. I even went to my local hardware store looking for a solution and found nothing that would solve my problem. That’s when I decided to build my own solution.

The ToolHANGER is born

I started by laying out all of my tools on a piece of plywood and arranging them by shape, size and family. It had to be organized, comprehensive, and aesthetically pleasing. Once I had the final design, I attached my tools and traced them out so I knew exactly where each belonged. I labeled the sockets and the wrenches so I could easily identify the correct standard and metric sizes.

Satisfied with my creation I hung my new tool board on the wall.When my friends saw it they wanted one too.Where did you get this?What is it called?That was when I came up with The ToolHANGER name, and jokingly teased them why doesn’t your tool hang? After the overwhelming requests I received, I decided to produce The ToolHANGER.

If it was Easy, Everyone would do it

Creating a new invention that consumers will want and need is hard regardless of the field you are in. But once you have created your idea, the work is just beginning.

As you’ll hopefully see if you keep reading below I’ve covered everything…over the last year I have exhaustively crunched all my numbers to develop my business plan and marketing strategy. Now The ToolHANGER needs you!

Trademarks

Now that the The ToolHANGER was designed, built, and people wanted it, I sought out a patent attorney to trademark The ToolHANGER name, logo and does your tool hang? slogan. Once these names and logo were registered I secured the domain name for my future website.

Engineering

My next step was to find and work with an engineer to take my rough prototype and create an electronic CAD drawing of The ToolHANGER. We laid out each tool in a software program to achieve precise locations and spacing. We designed molded brackets, pegs, and trays to securely hold each tool in place, to fit all brand name hand tools. Once the design was complete we performed various design validations and mechanical and stress tests to ensure the board would perform as it was designed to do.

We then made a prototype to test our design and its use in practical application. This is the prototype you see in the video holding all the tools. We are pleased with the physical characteristics and use of the board.We have made a couple minor changes from this prototype to enhance the board. We are now ready to have the board molded.

Manufacturing

I took my prototype and CAD drawings to several mold producers to create The ToolHANGER. I needed to select a rigid durable material, and also understand their molding and production processes and costs. I have selected a great partner here in the United States who will produce The ToolHANGER for me.

Packaging

The next business partner I needed to find was a box manufacturer to produce a box to ship The ToolHANGER. I also needed a screw manufacturer to provide the screws necessary to mount The ToolHANGER to wall studs. I have secured the box, protective shipping material, and the screws.

Shipping

The ToolHANGER will be shipped to my supporters through the mail so I needed to find a cost effective and efficient way to ship this product. I met with several carriers and have chosen a partner who will track each package through the delivery process, provide online notifications and meet my delivery needs at a fair price.

Marketing

To launch The ToolHANGER on Kick Starter and promote it, I needed a creative studio to help me build a website and Facebook page.We needed to produce a demonstration video and take photos of The ToolHANGER to show you the great product you are backing. I found the best. We produced The ToolHANGER images, website and video. The ToolHANGER website and Facebook page will launch to give you updates of our Kick Starter progress.
