A photographic journey in the Pacific Northwest of the impacts on salmon and the ecosystem.
** Project Update** Loaded video today. Forgive me, I was nervous!
Rogue Waters - an overiew
Rogue Waters is a publication that aims to educate and encourage people all over the world to get involved in salmon conservation issues through informative editorials and a photographically rich book. The book focuses three different kinds of salmon, Chinook, Sockeye and Coho, all of which are on the endangered species list.
These salmon will be represented by an array of photographs and short fact section, followed by detailed information on habitat, diet, mating, as well as other interesting information.
The book will focus on the salmon themselves, their impact on the rivers they spawn in, the oceans they live in, and on how they figure in to the survival of other species. The book will also show how their habitats are being threatened by pollution and development by humans.
Angela Krout, a practicing author, has been a writer and a conservation advocate for many years. She grew up in southeast Missouri on a catfish farm and grew up in the knowledge and traditions of aquaculture and fisheries. She has published articles for examiner.com as well as articles for the Heartland Spirit. She lives in Kansas City, Missouri, with her husband, two boys and two cats. This is her first book.
THE PROJECT
This May, I plan to raise money to support the book, Rogue Waters, that will tell the tale of salmon in the Pacific Northwest and how they teeter on the brink of extinction.
This book will be written as not only a photographic journey of the salmon across the Pacific Northwest, but of their impact, including ecological, cultural, and economic across the Pacific Northwest. How their demise can lead to the collapse of the food chain and demise of other species such as Orcas and bears.
Pulling together all the information to tell this story will involve, extensive literature research, interviews with experts in the field, expeditions across the region to the places where the Salmon have all but disappeared, and to the places where they are coming back into their habitats in larger and stronger numbers.
Field research will take place all over the Snake, Columbia and Klickitat Rivers as well as the Puget Sound. Along with the production of a photographically rich book, articles, and presentations from this project will be used to promote awareness and conservation of the Pacific Northwest Salmon.
HOW IS THE MONEY GOING TO BE USED?
Plane tickets, Car rental, Gas, More Gas (alot of driving along the highways and byways of Idaho, Washington and Oregon!), food, lodging… the base necessities. It doesn't look like much but $70 a day per person (photographer, research assistant, writer), per day over a month comes up to about $7000! Anything more, will directly go to funding the future research trips needed to complete the book.
WHAT WE'LL GIVE
A weekly travel blog with details of our adventures about the people and places we encounter as well as informative behind the scenes footage of the entire process, including short video clips and photos. We want you to travel with us and hope that our journey will inspire you to help support conservation efforts across the world.
Additionally, when able, we will post daily updates to the blog as well.
We're bringing you over 900 man hours of work to make this possible. Why? Because it is our passion. Because we are committed to the survival of salmon and the education of the public on the very real impact of the salmon on the ecosystem.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
In two word: support and money.
Share the word. Talk to your friends! Get them to support the project!
Without your support, we cannot afford to fund the entire project on our own. We have come up with a range of wonderful perks that you can purchase that will help us make this book a reality.
THANK YOU
The Salmon are an integral part of the Pacific Northwest. They are one of the most widely recognized icons in the world. Your generous support will further the cultural and ecological education surrounding the endangered and threatened Pacific Northwest Salmon.
