About this project
Thanks for visiting my Kickstart 2012 Project. In case you just stumbled upon this page I'll take a minute to introduce myself. My name is Rodney Hayden and I'm from a small town south of San Antonio called Pleasanton, TX. I began playing music at the age of 14 and by the time I graduated from High School I was playing dancehalls across central and south Texas every weekend. I grew up with the dream of playing music for a living and am extremely fortunate to have made friends around the world who have supported that dream.
On January 22, 2002 my debut album The Real Thing was released. The album was produced by Tony Brown & Rich Brotherton. One of my heroes, Robert Earl Keen, released the album on his record label and I was able to tour with him opening shows all over the USA.
In 2003 I moved to Austin, TX and signed a record deal with Koch Records and for a short time was label mates with a few more of my heroes, including Dwight Yoakam and Ray Price as well as REK. That year my 2nd album was released titled Living The Good Life.
In 2004 I signed a publishing deal and found myself moving to Nashville, TN where I wrote songs during the week and continued touring and playing shows on the weekends, literally making fans and friends one person at a time along the way.
In 2006 I married my wife Shenna and soon thereafter we moved back to Texas where I started my own record label, Palomino Records, and released my 3rd album titled Down The Road followed by the albums 12 Ounce World, Tavern Of Poets, Rodney Hayden (a self titled album of traditional cowboy songs) and now, Live From The Phoenix Saloon.
It's been an amazing 10 years and I am forever grateful to the people who have supported my career. My goal has always been simple, make a living playing music that I believe in. There is no separation for me, music has managed to wrap itself around me and is intertwined with every minute of my day. There are times along the way that it has felt more like a curse, but I know better. It's been the greatest gift that I could have ever received and I'm thankful. Music has introduced me to lifelong friends that I otherwise never would have met, it has taken me to parts of the world that I never would have been able to visit, and it has allowed me to deal with events in my life that I'm not sure I would have been able to handle without. Music has been my closest friend and I can't express what it means to be able to share that music with so many people.
As January 2012 approached I couldn't help but reflect on the road that has brought me here. On one hand, recording my first album seems like a lifetime ago, and on the other it seems like it's gone by in the blink of an eye.
As I mentioned earlier, one of the biggest thrills was being able to work with one of my heroes Robert Earl Keen on a day to day basis. He even taught me to parallel park at midnight in Nashville when I was 18! I've played The Filmore, Willie Nelson's 4th Of July Picnic, Billy Bobs Texas with Merle Haggard, Austin City Limits Festival, The Astrodome and countless other unbelievable stages and venues. I've been mugged, beat up and had my front teeth knocked out on Lower Broadway in Nashville, seen my name in People Magazine, USA Today and Entertainment Weekly, had guitars stolen, bars who wouldn't pay me, and barely survived a car wreck. I've been broke down and stranded in the middle of nowhere without money to get back home, slept in my car and pawned the guitars that hadn't been stolen. I've seen the Mona Lisa, walked the streets of Venice and witnessed firsthand the Northern Lights. I've played over 2,000 shows in 9 different countries and have put over 1,000,000 miles on three different touring vehicles. All because of music, and I wouldn't trade a second of it for anything. I'm thankful for all of it.
I'm excited about what the future holds in store, and if the Lord's willing I'll still be taking my music around the world and making new friends one by one as I reflect once again ten years from now.
