About this project
In 2009, I mindfully lost a significant amount of weight. I started fitting my body into spaces it could not previously fit. What started as an exercise in measuring my transformed body, has evolved into an art project titled "Adventures in Being (small)."
I have implemented "Adventures in Being (small)" in over 200 locations across the planet. In late February and March, I will be traveling throughout Mexico to build a new body of work within this series!
I am fortunate in that there has already been support for "Adventures in Being (small) in Mexico". The School of the Museum of Fine Arts awarded me their alumni 2011 Traveling Fellowship to help fund the project and I have been offered an artist Residency through Arquetopia once in Mexico. However, there are additional costs to this project.
Your donations will go towards:
Creating the most efficient travel documentation kit
Printing costs
Hiring guides remote locations on route
Residency Fees
etc.
After 2 years of being invested in this project, I have seen it develop as a cultural survey in how the body's gesture informs space. My goal with this work is to create unmediated situations that challenges how people may consider their surroundings. I believe that when we engage in the act of remaining our environment, we acknowledge it's infinite potential. When we reimagine what our bodies are capable of, we are able to break down boundaries and open ourselves up for new possibilities.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my project!

The School of the Museum of Fine Arts Traveling Fellowship that I was awarded gave me 1 year to complete my travels. At the end of that year (in May 2012) The 10 recipients of the Fellowship will have their work reviewed again and 1 of us will be awarded a solo exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2013.
If I do not have my work shown at the MFA, I plan to find an appropriate venue and will definitely show this work elsewhere.

I stay inside of a space for as long as my body or the space will allow. Sometimes this is several seconds, sometimes 1 hour. This work is always site-sensitive. I practice being mindful of the totality of the environments I infiltrate, taking into consideration things like the weather, social dynamics, context, etc. These are the things that determine the duration that I am inside of a space.

I may seek out a place, but never a space. I interact with the spaces as they are and I leave them as I found them. The work is about the process of negotiating the relationship between my body and a space, both physically and psychologically. To decide on a space prior to making the work would make it about something else.

I lost the weight by good ol' fashion diet (portion control) and exercise. I mainly have a regimen of circuit training and yoga but am interested in different methods of exercise and how wellness is built into culture. I hope to develop this project in a way that addresses cross cultural ideas about health and wellness
